Agents of Mystery Season 2 (Miseuteori Susadan) sees the agents reunite for three new mysteries. Ranging in style and setting, these scenarios will test their stamina, courage, and patience as they overcome obstacles and evade supernatural threats, with the stakes raised in a clever and engaging way.

The first big twist comes early for this season. As the agents sit down for their first briefing, they learn that their benefactors at XIN are undergoing a revolt within their ranks. This not only dictates the objective of their first assignment but also introduces an overarching storyline that links the first two mysteries they have to unravel.

The introduction of a larger plot in Agents of Mystery Season 2 gives a bit more cohesion to the first two-thirds of its journey. Having the events of the first story inform the second makes for a more compelling series. There is even a decision made by the group in the first story that is presented as affecting the scenario of the second. Its just a shame that they weren’t able to string all three stories together.

Splintering XIN changes the practical implications for Agents of Mystery Sesason 2.

Agents of Mystery Season 2 Ghost Story

The decision to splinter XIN in the season’s opening also has a more practical impact on the group. With their home base no longer available, the group is given a meeting location at the start of each mission, where a vehicle is waiting for their use. No more teleporters for them.

The need to drive to their destinations is a solid addition to the show. With some initial information always provided to them, the group can begin understanding the big picture of the problems they will face along the way. It also lets the group chat for a few minutes, going over what happened last time and speculating about what is over the next horizon.

These chats are just some of the many fun interactions the six main characters have throughout Agents of Mystery Season 2. While there is plenty of playful ribbing when the jump scares hit, the group keeps a positive vibe overall. This creates a laid-back energy that sets it apart from the more common, cut-throat reality TV offerings. The overall pleasantness of the cast helps to paper over some of the show’s roughest moments. Though not completely.

Agents of Mystery Season 2’s biggest hurdles are self-inflicted.

Agents of Mystery Season 2 Hoarde Charges

The biggest hurdles that Agents of Mystery Season 2 fails to clear are in its first three episodes. The task presented to the team here quickly devolves into little more than a series of challenge rooms. There is a good variety of tasks laid out for the group, but how long some of them take becomes grueling.

Seeing the team try to laugh it off as they fail to coordinate to overcome a rhythm challenge the first time is worth a chuckle. By the end of the nearly 20 straight minutes of misfires, though, no amount of good-spirited humor could maintain any interest.

Another pitfall that brings the first storyline down comes in its visual presentation. Several moments employ hard, strobbing lights. While I don’t suffer from photosensitivity, it still made me need to wince as I looked away. If you do suffer from such struggles, you may want to approach these episodes with caution.

The biggest scenarios are largely boring.

Agents of Mystery Season 2 Alien Cocoon

In stark contrast to the stumbles of the first leg of the run, Agents of Mystery Season 2‘s second arc is easily the best. Aliens, mutants (zombies), and a variety of creative scenarios showcased what the formula could do at its best in the middle section. Seeing the party lean heavily into some classic video game logic as they snuck around meandering hordes was surprisingly fun.

The final task set before the agents creates a classic ghost story-style horror scenario for them to navigate. Unfortunately, this final story takes a hard step back from the previous one, leaving one wondering why they expanded the episode count from six in the first place.

The big problem with this scenario is that it is largely boring. Due to the nature of the danger, there is never any true brush with the threat. Just a few jump scares, but nothing more. This leaves the group mostly just talking about how scary the last jump moment was as they wander around an abandoned town, moving from clue to clue.

Agents of Mystery Season 2 shows a spark, suggesting there is merit to its formula. However, the style of scenario that works best for what the series tries to do is far more narrow than the wide range of mysteries it sets before its agents. At its best, it’s genuinely enjoyable. However, more often than not, it struggles just to be fine.

Agents of Mystery Season 2 is streaming now on Netflix.
