REVIEW: ‘Spy x Family’ Season 3 Episode 10 – “Austin’s Troubles/A Normal Mixer/ Moon Landing”

Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 10, “Austin’s Troubles/A Normal Mixer/ Moon Landing,” looks at the Forger family individually as they interact with coworkers, classmates, and patients. While the stories vary in narrative style, they all share a common, overriding focus: humor.

The first of our trio of vignettes focuses on Loid (Takuya Eguchi, Mashle: Magic and Muscles) as he tries to help one of the Eden Hall teachers overcome his trauma from the busjacking incident. The emotional edge of the subject matter is heavily filed down, as the teacher’s symptoms play out in wildly exaggerated fashion. His panic attacks see him rolling around on the ground and embellishing his terror in ways that can only be taken as comical.

While the central element of the short story is humor, Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 10 does present an interesting outcome as Loid dives into the root of his patient’s problem. It offers a bit of investigation into how we identify problems and can even deceive ourselves into framing struggles in a way that is more convenient for us than addressing the true problem. This gives the tale a meaningful center amid its comical delivery.

Most of Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 10 is more one-note in execution.

Yor in Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 10

The other two-thirds of Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 10 don’t have such a center. Rather, they are more one-note; falling back on pure charm and established jokes to elicit some solid laughs with Yor (Saori Hayami, Metaphor: ReFantazio) and Anya (Atsumi Tanezaki, My Dress-Up Darling).

In her ongoing attempt to pass as usual, Yor accepts an invitation from her coworkers to go out for dinner. This leads to her indulging in a bit of alcohol, which sees the assassin quickly fall apart, as one would expect. Through her slurred words and clouded thoughts, Yor tries to convince her coworkers that she and Loid have a normal marriage, even as the evidence shows they are far better off than her coworkers’ relationships.

As mentioned above, this sequence in Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 10 doesn’t really do anything new, but is nonetheless entertaining. Yor’s alcohol-induced thought lines are wild, as her need to be “normal” sends her potentially careening further and further from what most would say normal actually is.

Despite Yor’s sometimes abrupt and baffling choices and declarations, her coworkers come to see that Yor can be a lot of fun, even deciding to invite her out again. Though much of this is probably due to their not realizing what was being said wasn’t necessarily a joke. But, as they say, ignorance is bliss.

Even if it fails to do anything different, Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 10 is still funny.

Yor's imagination in Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 10

The final sequence, playing out after the end credits of Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 10, sees the Eden Hall students reacting to news of the space race between the East and the West. We see varying levels of excitement among the students, with some, like Anya, completely captivated by the prospect of space travel.

This filler ending is a wonderful highlight of the innocence of youth, as moments with Anya often are. Seeing Anya run around making starship noises with a paper spaceship in hand is a level of innocence that is never unwelcome. Making it even sweeter is Becky, who stands off to the side, smiling warmly at her friend’s enthusiasm. Even if you can’t be that innocent, never lose your ability to appreciate it when you see it.

Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 10 crafts a perfectly enjoyable set of stories. While nothing major happens within them, they deliver fun and warmth in quantities that are hard to complain about. With how much has already happened this season between busjackings and emotional flashbacks, it’s hard to complain too much about an uneventful, but charming visit with the Forgers.

Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 10 is streaming now on Crunchyroll.
