Netflix has been investing in its international programming across the globe. Spain has been one of the countries front and center in 2025 for Netflix, and this December, the streamer is continuing that expansion with City of Shadows, a gritty new police thriller.

But City of Shadows isn’t an original Spanish series. The limited series adapts the first novel in the Milo Malart tetralogy by author Aro Sáinz de la Maza, published by Destino (Grupo Planeta). With a premiere date, first look images, and a peek at the cast, City of Shadows looks to offer more to the crime drama space. The limited series, which stars Isak Férriz and Verónica Echegui and is directed by Jorge Torregrossa, written by Carlos López and Clara Esparrach, and produced by Arcadia.

Arcadia is the production company behind City of Shadows and was founded by Ibon Cormenzana in 2004. The studio was established with “the aim of producing high-quality feature films with international potential, supporting auteur cinema and nurturing the talent of emerging filmmakers.” The production company’s last titles include the Academy Award-nominated Robot Dreams.

What is City of Shadows about?

The six-episode series kicks off like many police thrillers do, with a crime scene. Set in Barcelona, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, La Pedrera – Casa Milà, is now the backdrop for a heinous crime. A burned body is discovered in front of the building.

This grim discovery draws Inspector Milo Malart (Isak Férriz) back into action after having been recently suspended from the Mossos d’Esquadra for insubordination, now partnering with Deputy Inspector Rebeca Garrido (Verónica Echegui) to track down the perpetrator of the unsettling crime.
