Long-running MMO publisher KingsIsle Entertainment has finally brought its popular turn-based deckbuilding game, Wizard101, to consoles, opening up the world of the Spiral to a brand-new audience. Previously a PC exclusive, the magical, family-friendly title is now available to download and play for free on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, with a Nintendo Switch version coming at a later date.
This launch invites both a new generation of players and returning Ravenwood Academy alumni to immerse themselves in a mystical world of charming characters, fantastical environments, and unique card-based combat.
What is Wizard101?
As a student at the Ravenwood School of Magical Arts, you are the final hope against a growing darkness that threatens to consume Wizard City and all the realms of the Spiral. The narrative centers on a rogue professor and his nefarious schemes, putting the balance of the world at risk. The core gameplay loop blends exploration and story with its signature combat system:
- Turn-Based Card Battles: Sharpen your strategy and wield potent magic in thrilling, turn-based encounters.
- Deck Customization: Players must customize their spell deck before each encounter to ensure they have the right cards for the right moment.
- Solo or Co-op Play: Face enemies on your own or team up with friends to take on bigger threats.
Beyond the main questline, wizards can engage in a variety of non-story-based activities, including: Hatching and training cute pets, crafting powerful weapons and gear, gardening for rewards, catching rare fish, and personalizing their home with castle decorations. You know, all your favorite MMO things.
