Long-running MMO publisher KingsIsle Entertainment has finally brought its popular turn-based deckbuilding game, Wizard101, to consoles, opening up the world of the Spiral to a brand-new audience. Previously a PC exclusive, the magical, family-friendly title is now available to download and play for free on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, with a Nintendo Switch version coming at a later date.

This launch invites both a new generation of players and returning Ravenwood Academy alumni to immerse themselves in a mystical world of charming characters, fantastical environments, and unique card-based combat.

What is Wizard101?

As a student at the Ravenwood School of Magical Arts, you are the final hope against a growing darkness that threatens to consume Wizard City and all the realms of the Spiral. The narrative centers on a rogue professor and his nefarious schemes, putting the balance of the world at risk. The core gameplay loop blends exploration and story with its signature combat system:

  • Turn-Based Card Battles: Sharpen your strategy and wield potent magic in thrilling, turn-based encounters.
  • Deck Customization: Players must customize their spell deck before each encounter to ensure they have the right cards for the right moment.
  • Solo or Co-op Play: Face enemies on your own or team up with friends to take on bigger threats.

Beyond the main questline, wizards can engage in a variety of non-story-based activities, including: Hatching and training cute pets, crafting powerful weapons and gear, gardening for rewards, catching rare fish, and personalizing their home with castle decorations. You know, all your favorite MMO things.

What to expect from adventuring in the Spiral

The Spiral is a constantly expanding universe offering over a thousand hours of questing content and more than 20 worlds to discover. Join millions of other Wizards for assistance with challenging foes, trading valuable Treasure Cards, or hatching powerful Pets.

Wizard101 also allows players to head to the arena to prove their deckbuilding might, improve their rank, and fight to the top of the leaderboard in 1v1 or team-based PvP battles. And of course, you’ll uncover secrets and explore vast worlds in an ever-expanding story. There’s always a new adventure on the horizon. All while you earn rewards in special, limited-time events that rotate weekly.

What do you get from playing Wizard101 on console?

Players can download Wizard101 for free right now on their Xbox and PlayStation devices and immediately access free content up to the expanded Free-to-Play area in the Oasis zone of Krokotopia.

For those looking to dive deeper into the mysteries of the Spiral, further content can be unlocked through two main avenues: the purchase of Crowns, the game’s premium in-game currency, or via area Access Passes bought through the console storefront.

How much is Wizard101 on console?

The initial content package is the Arc 1 Access Pass, which will be available for $19.99 at launch on PlayStation and Xbox. This pass grants access to the entire first arc of the game’s storyline.

While the game is currently exclusive to PlayStation and Xbox among consoles, the launch on Nintendo Switch is planned for a later date. The Switch version will also be available for $19.99, but this price will include full access to the entire first storyline arc of Wizard101. Furthermore, players who create accounts on a Nintendo device will play on the same console server as those on PlayStation and Xbox.

Is there cross-save?

It’s important to note that all console players will begin with a fresh start, completely independent of any prior progress made on PC servers, as cross-progression is not currently supported.

Wizard101 is out now on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
