Prime Video’s video game adaptations continue, this time with a Life is Strange TV show. With critically successful live-action video game adaptations like Fallout and Yakuza: Like A Dragon, and animation projects featured in the Secret Level anthology, the streamer and its studio keep looking for the next video game success. And now, it’s not just Sophie Turner as Lara Croft looking to carry the torch.

This week, the streaming platform has officially greenlit a live-action series adaptation of the acclaimed video game franchise, Life Is Strange. The new show, which will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories. Adapted from the beloved Square Enix-published title (originally developed by Don’t Nod), this new live-action video game series will feature Charlie Covell as its showrunner.

Known for their work on The End of the F*ing World and KAOS, two shows our critics enjoyed, Covell is taking on a video game series with profound and cathartic themes. The series explores sexuality, relationships, and mental health, and has only grown over time. The Life Is Strange TV show is a collaborative effort from Square Enix, Story Kitchen, and LuckyChap, and is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.

This isn’t the first time Story Kitched has taken video games to the silver or small screen. They’re currently attached to the Sifu live-action (directed by John Wick‘s Chad Stahelski), the Powerhouse-animated Tomb Raider: Legend of Lara Croft, and in the past, they were a part of bringing Sonic to a theater near you. It’s safe to say that they know what they’re looking for.

“Story Kitchen has always believed that Life is Strange deserved to be more than just a game—it’s a cultural touchstone,” said Story Kitchen’s Dimitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg. “After a decade-long journey, we’re honored to be bringing this beloved story to Amazon MGM alongside our incredible partners at Square Enix, our brilliant showrunner/writer Charlie Covell, and the amazing team at LuckyChap. Together, this thoughtfully assembled dream team is ready to share Life is Strange with the world in an entirely new way!”

Additionally, LuckyChap is the perfect production partner for a story that tackles gender in the same way Life is Strange does. Founded by Margot Robbie, LuckyChap Entertainment has a self-declared mission to promote stories about women told by women storytellers.

“We’ve been huge fans of the visionary Charlie Covell for years, so partnering with them on the adaptation of Life is Strange is truly a dream come true,” said LuckyChap. “Charlie is an exceptional steward of revered IP, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have them at the helm of such an original, beloved, and culturally resonant video game. We’re also deeply grateful to be collaborating with our friends at Amazon MGM Studios, Story Kitchen, and Square Enix, and can’t wait to bring Chloe, Max, and Arcadia Bay to life.”

Based on the original game, the series centers on Max, a photography student who uncovers her power to rewind time after using it to save her best friend, Chloe. As she grapples with this new skill, Max joins Chloe in investigating the mysterious disappearance of a fellow student. Their search uncovers a dark underbelly to their quiet town, ultimately leading them to a life-or-death decision that will change their lives forever.
