Apple TV+ released the trailer for its upcoming historical drama Chief of War, starring, written, and executive produced by Jason Momoa. Set amidst the islands of Hawai‘i, the nine-episode series, based on true events, follows warrior Ka‘iana, portrayed by Momoa, as he endeavors to unify the islands before Western colonization in the late 18th century.

Chief of War will make its global debut on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on Friday, August 1, 2025, followed by new episodes every Friday through September 19, 2025.

The streamer has been knocking television out of the park, both when it comes to genre storytelling like Silo and Severance, and stories grounded in cultural histories and traditions like Pachinko. With webtoon and manga adaptations like Dr. Brain and Drops of God, and of course new movies, the streamer continues to make a name for itself.

What is Jason Momoa’s Chief of War?

Chief of War, co-created by Momoa and Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett, tells the story of the unification and colonization of Hawai‘i from an indigenous perspective. This historical drama is a passion project for both creators, who share native Hawaiian heritage. The series aims to provide an unprecedented look at this pivotal period in Hawaiian history.
