Ask any Godzilla fan, and they’ll tell you how difficult it is to watch Shin Godzilla. Well, now it will get much easier for North American fans, with GKIDS formally releasing the highly lauded film in North American theaters on August 14. To celebrate the upcoming summer release, GKIDS released a brand-new trailer and poster for the film’s 4K Remaster.
Can’t make it out to the theaters? Fret not. Shin Godzilla will be getting a home entertainment release shortly. At this time, no formal date has been announced, so stay tuned for more updates.
Originally opening in Japan in 2016, the film will be released in its original Japanese language with English subtitles, including restored text cards. This is the first time the Shin Godzilla 4K remaster has been released in North America, and the first time GKIDS has released a Godzilla film since it was acquired by Toho in 2024.

What is Shin Godzilla about?
Something has surfaced in Tokyo Bay. As the Prime Minister of Japan pleads with the public to remain calm, a horrific creature of tremendous size makes landfall in the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Then it evolves. The government assembles a motley task force to combat the monster when an envoy from the US Department of State delivers a folder of classified documents. On its cover is written “GODZILLA.”
From visionary directors Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, Shin Godzilla offers a thrilling origin story to one of cinema’s greatest creations. Propelled by astounding visual effects and rapid fire dialogue, Shin Godzilla is equal parts pulse-pounding action film and venomous political satire, worthy of the franchise’s towering history.

The Continued Excellence of GKIDS
Even without Toho’s acquisition of GKIDS, the award-winning producer and distribution company, has always had its pulse on award-winning films and has always made it a mission to introduce audiences to Asian animation and cinema. Shin Godzilla perfectly fits their model, with the film being nearly impossible to find to watch. With this acquisition, they continue their mission to offer audiences access to the inaccessible.
Not into Godzilla? They are a huge proponent of animation and have spent more than a decade expanding the definition and perception of what animation can do artistically. One way they have done that is by introducing American audiences to the critically-acclaimed films of other master filmmakers from around the world such as Mamoru Hosoda (Mirai, Belle), Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells, Wolfwalkers), Benjamin Renner (Ernest & Celestine), Makoto Shinkai (Weathering With You), Nora Twomey (The Breadwinner), Alberto Vázquez (Unicorn Wars) and Masaaki Yuasa (Inu-Oh, The Night is Short, Walk on Girl), among countless others.
To further this vision, GKIDS founded and hosts ANIMATION IS FILM, the annual LA-based film festival that embraces the highest aspirations of animation as a cinematic art form and is a vocal advocate for filmmakers who push the boundaries of the medium to its fullest range of artistic expressions.
