The launch trailer for 11 bit studios’ upcoming relatable sci-fi game, The Alters, was dropped during the PC Gaming Show, ringing the approaching June 13th release date. The trailer features “We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow,” a hit single by French singer Soko.

“With the team steadily growing, the pandemic reshaping the way we work, and all the usual challenges of game development, these past years have been both creatively rewarding and full of hurdles,” says The Alters Game Director, Tomasz Kisilewicz.

“But now, as we stand on the brink of release, I’m proud to say we’ve delivered a game that stays true to its original vision—thanks entirely to the determination and talent of our incredible development team. They brought The Alters to life, and we can’t wait for players to finally experience it.”

With concepts for the new IP emerging and beginning to form in 2020, The Alters marks another ambitious project for 11 bit studios. So, what can you expect from the game?

What is The Alters about?

What if all your choices turned out to be an illusion? That’s the question haunting Jan Dolski, the protagonist. Jan may be the sole survivor of a crash landing on a distant planet, but he won’t be alone long. To operate the mobile base—and escape the planet—he must create alternate versions of himself.

These “alters” come from lives he never lived, walking paths he never took. They are crucial for survival, but they may resent him, because some of them believe they lived better versions of his life. Is escape a selfish goal? Will you treat different Jan’s as mere resources or autonomous beings deserving of empathy? In The Alters, survival is personal.

As you navigate survival and moral dilemmas, you will explore a branching narrative filled with captivating character dynamics and challenging decisions.

Key Features of The Alters:

Survive on a hostile planet.

To operate the mobile base, you’ll need to explore the planet’s surface in search of precious resources, like metals and organics. Yet, venturing outside the safe haven comes with the risk of exposing you and your Alters to various deadly anomalies as well as the ever-present radiation of the sun. Pay attention to the in-game day and night cycle and plan your daily activities wisely!

Gather resources to escape the deadly sun.

Gathered resources can be used in different ways – create necessary items or develop your base with additional modules like Research Lab or Social Room. Sometimes, you will have to choose between creating items specially for your Alters and ones that could push the mission forward, like Anomaly Detectors or Radiation Filters. The burden of every decision lies solely on your shoulders, as you will never be able to satisfy everyone’s needs.

Create Alters and manage their needs.

Use the quantum computer onboard your base to simulate alternate outcomes of your past choices and uncover Jan’s different life paths. Thanks to Rapidium’s remarkable properties, each Alter is brought to life with unique skills and emotional depths. These variations offer opportunities and challenges as you navigate personal struggles and manage the fragile dynamics of your crew.

At the same time, you’re challenged to reflect on one of life’s fundamental questions – do we shape our destiny or does it shape us? This makes your bid for survival a deeply personal experience.

Explore a planet rich with biomes

The planet features unique biomes and secrets waiting to be found, but deadly anomalies stand in your way. Levitating rocks and eerie distortions of reality attract attention immediately, while other singularities remain invisible to the naked eye and require special tools to uncover.

In all cases, you must be extra careful – or face the risk of instant death, radiation-induced injuries, and even disintegration of time and space. Also, you may want to avoid exploring the planet during hours when intense radioactivity can eat right through your suit. Happy travels!
