With the Nintendo Switch 2 fast approaching, gamers can expect a sizable group of release window titles to drop alongside the hotly anticipated console. Recently we had the opportunity to visit SEGA’s office to get some hands-on time with one of their imminent titles – RAIDOU Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army, developed by ATLUS.
The original release, Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs the Soulless Army, was part of the Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner series. While the game is almost 20 years old, this remaster aims to preserve its style while adding quality of life and UI updates, like full voice overs and an added fast travel feature.
RAIDOU Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army puts you in the role of Raidou Kuzunoha, a detective in Japan’s Taisho era who can capture demons and utilize their abilities to aid in his investigations. Along the way, you can battle other demons in real-time combat, attacking, dodging, and jumping around small battle arenas to lash out with various attacks while avoiding enemy attacks. Exploiting your enemies’ weakness eventually allows to use a powerful Spirit Slash that deals heavy damage to all enemies.
RAIDOU Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army takes you to the Taisho era.
You can also use your demon allies’ abilities along with your own spells to exploit your enemy’s weaknesses and defeat them or add them to your roster. Since each demon has their own elemental move set, you can also swap demons out mid-battle to adjust to your enemies. Fans of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise will see some familiar faces and abilities.
During our time with the game we were able to explore the town, clearing out rifts that contain demons, and using our demon allies to aid in exploration, retrieving items that were just out of reach. We also gained the ability to fuse two demons together, allowing us to create specially tailored demons with abilities inherited from their parents. We were encouraged to experiment with fusion, though we were warned not to fuse one specific demon that would prove useful in the story to come.
After wandering around and speaking to a specially marked character, she gave us a bottle of wine and mentioned something about a turtle. With the wine in our possession, we headed to the scene of our latest investigation, the home of a prominent family. After exploring the home, we discovered a basement leading to a chamber full of demons, including one turtle-like demon that was thirsty for wine. After giving him the wine and defeating him, the demon ferried us across the underground lake so we could explore further and discover what appeared to be a cell.
Raidou Kuzunoha on the Switch 2 is something to be excited for.
Using one of our demon’s special abilities, we were able to locate a diary belonging to the former prisoner, implicating her family in her disappearance. Shortly after, Raidou was attacked by a group of skeletal demons, chastising him for reading someone’s diary and discovering their evidence before they could dispose of it, resulting in a boss fight. This fight introduced attacks that required me to gather up my demons and jump over them, making it clear that you can’t simply use brute force for every fight.
With the skeleton boss defeated, our time with RAIDOU Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army was at an end. Although our time with the game was brief, we’re excited to see what else is in store for Raidou Kuzunoha. To celebrate the upcoming launch, you can receive a free DLC by creating a SEGA account and linking it to the platform where you’ll be playing the game. This DLC consists of some healing items that can help you along your adventure when the game releases.
