It can be hard to write about Ranma 1/2 weekly because it’s just so dang consistent. From Episode 1 onward, the series has exceeded expectations as an adaptation and removed from its original anime and source material. Lively and buoyed by striking animation and clever, big comedy, it continues to deliver excellence through tremendous silliness. Ranma 1/2 Episode 11 keeps that trend intact and even elevates it with some of the best direction of the series so far and a fun cliffhanger leading into the finale.

Shampoo (Rei Sakuma) continues to inspire chaos following her abrupt arrival in Episode 10. She’s smitten with male Ranma (Megumi Hayashibara and Kappei Yamaguchi), much to Akane’s (Noriko Hidaka) chagrin. Based on the laws of the Chinese Amazons, while the kiss of death given to a woman is a sign of death, the kiss given to a man means a vow of marriage. This ideal isn’t reciprocated by Ranma, who continually must fend off Shampoo’s advances throughout. She’s relentless, from hanging on to him in front of the family to crawling beside him while he sleeps.

It’s an easy setup for comedy and miscommunication as Akane is quick to anger throughout the weird flirtations between Shampoo and Ranma. But where Ranma 1/2 excels beyond the story is in the direction. It looks great, allowing for depth and background action while focusing on the foreground. There’s a hilarious visual gag at the start where Genba paces, panicked, across the screen while the other group members discuss Shampoo’s marriage declaration.

The color stories elevate Ranma 1/2

But there are a few key sequences that truly shine. First, there’s the image of Ranma lying against the rooftop as night falls, with the city blurring in the background. It’s a moment of quiet in a series so often preoccupied with the hectic. Of course, it’s disturbed by Ryoga, who swiftly throws cold water on Ranma, transforming him into his girl form, but the moment sticks with graceful background animation and color combos.

The color stories of Ranma 1/2 are endlessly noteworthy and intelligently deployed. This is highlighted in another momentary quiet in Episode 11 as the sun sets. The animation utilizes complementary colors—in this case, purple and orange—to heighten the warmth of the sunset. There are no empty, blank spaces. Instead, each sequence is full and lively, even while still.

Even the fight sequences that could easily dissolve into blurred motion are crisp here, allowing for dynamic and kinetic direction. The way the camera follows Ranma is electric, creating motion with how it moves and weaves between traded blows. The fight sequences embrace fluidity, allowing easy transitions, lighting, and style to shine through. For all of its stripped-down character designs that rely on exaggerated facial expressions, the action and movement itself are subtly detailed.

A cliffhanger shakes things up

Ranma 1/2 Episode 11

But it’s not just one of the more visually triumphant installments but one of the most emotional, too. Granted, as emotional as Ranma 1/2 gets. We’re inching closer and closer to Akane and Ranma being vulnerable and open about their mutual emotions. Akane’s anger largely stems from jealousy, even as Ranma continues to try to explain himself. The two clearly care about one another, and they’re beginning to realize it, even if it’s taking a glacial pace.

Ranma 1/2 Episode 11 also delivers an epic conclusion and cliffhanger following Akane and Shampoo’s fight, with the latter delivering Akane the kiss of death. As the two brawls, Ranma scours the school, looking for them, hoping to intervene and keep Akane safe. He finds them and momentarily panics before realizing she’s alive. However, she’s concussed and doesn’t remember who Ranma is. Considering their growth and continued closeness it’s a fantastic twist and way to drive more drama and hurdles their way.

With some genuinely superb animation that utilizes scope and scale in inventive, energized ways, Ranma 1/2 Episode 11 is another standout episode in a series full of them. From the laugh-out-loud comedy to the heartfelt interactions and the stunning, graceful action, it delivers everything we expect from MAPPA’s very best.

Ranma 1/2 Episode 11 is out now on Netflix.
