Rudeus’ (Yumi Uchiyama) return home isn’t the happy occasion one would want. With Paul’s death and Zenith’s memory loss, the adventure wasn’t as successful as it could’ve been. Plus, Rudeus needs to speak to Sylphiette (Ai Kayano, The Grimm Variations) about Roxy’s (Konomi Kohara) future in their lives in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 24 “Succession.”

As the episode opens, the party is closing in on Rudeus’ house as their long journey comes to a close. With his home in sight, Rudeus recalls some of the words the Man-God (Kujira, Suicide Squad Isekai) spoke before he departed to save Zenith. Realizing what they could mean, Rudeus breaks down into a panic as he rushes home, dreading what he may find. After a brief search, he soon learns from Aisha (Yûki Takada) that Sylphiette’s pregnancy is going fine and all is well with them. Shortly thereafter, Sylphiette appears, confirming what Aisha has told Rudeus, much to his relief.

The way this opening plays out does a lot. First, it gets Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 24 off to a surprising start. The expectation for the group’s arrival was sullen, seasoned with awkwardness, given the range of information and discussion that was lined up to happen. Rudeus’ blind panic gives the opening an emotional pitch that viewers will be surprised by.

The shock of the moment is brought to life through the strong visual presentation. Rudeu’s mad search for signs of his family is tense and engaging, largely thanks to the energy conveyed through the art. Great camera angles are chosen, and the art etches the worry across Rudeus’ face.

The more subtle element of this sequence is what it says about how our mindset and perception can color our interpretation of things. When Rudeus first heard the Man-God ask if he’d be willing to leave his wife alone while he was away, he thought of it as nothing more than a general question. Now, with Paul’s death still weighing on his soul, the question morphs into a far more ominous warning.

Once things calm down, Aisha is sent to fetch Norn (Saya Aizawa, Engage Kiss) so everyone can be filled in on the state of things. The ensuing conversation fills the heart of Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 24 with a lot to process. How the girls take the news about Paul and Zenith delivers an emotional maelstrom. Norn takes it the hardest since both of her parents have been affected.

Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 24

While this scene is painful at its core, the tenderness shown to both girls allows it to also be uplifting. Once the initial rush of tears passes, Norn makes it a point to tell Aisha not to hold back her feelings for her mom, Lilia, who got home safely. This is a lovely moment between the girls. That Aisha would want to hold back her relief at seeing her mother is understandable; no one wants to celebrate while others mourn. That Norn can recognize Aisha’s need and not resent it highlights how much she has grown over the season.

Once the grim news of Paul’s passing is settled, everyone in the party but Roxy and Rudeus departs. As goodbyes are said, Elinalise (Rie Tanaka) calls out to Sylpiette, reminding her that Rudeus loves her. This sets the stage for Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 24’s second key moment.

With just the family gathered together, minus Lilia, Rudeus informs Sylphiette of his desire to bring Roxy into their family as his second wife. The immediate response to this request comes not from Sylphiette but from Norn. She rages at her brother, furious that while Sylphiette was worrying about him, he was taking another woman to his bed. While this is an oversimplification of the situation, Norn’s anger on behalf of her sister-in-law isn’t unreasonable. To watch Sylphiette work through her pregnancy and worry about her husband and find out this happened would bring out a negative response from most people.

When Sylphiette finally does speak, it is in a far more compassionate tone than Norn. She reveals she had already guessed what had happened. She recognized the way Roxy looked at Rudeus when they arrived. She is also less fazed by the news because of her expectations. She explains that, despite Rudeus’ promise to be faithful, she expected something like this to happen. Sylphiette then welcomes Roxy into their family with open arms.

Sylphiette’s acceptance of Roxy’s new role in their life and how she came to occupy it can be viewed in several ways. As a character who has always been rather meek, it isn’t unfounded to see Sylphiette’s acceptance as simply not wanting to rock the boat. She could be afraid of the results if she forced a choice out of Rudeus. After all, Rudeus still has a pair of Roxy’s panties he prays to each morning.

However, that same fact can also lend credence to Sylphiete’s stated understanding and acceptance of who her husband is. That Roxy was that impactful on him and with her now returning his emotions, seeing him refuse her even out of love for Sylphiette may be something she can’t imagine. Whatever the case may be, since the viewer receives no internal monologues from anyone but Rudeus, it will be up to them to parse out their feelings about the moment.

Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 24 ends with the birth of Sylphiette’s baby. With the family life stabilized and the child seemingly happy and healthy, this moment is a great endpoint for this chapter of Rudeus’ life. What comes next for him, his growing family, and the adventures that await them is for next season to worry about. For now, all is calm in their world.

Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 24 is streaming on Crunchyroll.
