Confessions, miscommunications, and the start of a slow-burn love story Whisper Me A Love Song (Sasayaku You ni Koi o Utau) Episode 1 leans heavily on the tropes. Good. Based on the manga written and illustrated by Eku Takeshima and adapted by Cloud Hearts and Yokohama Animation Laboratory studios, the series leans fully into the story’s romanticism. The premiere is heartfelt and hints at greater depth, bolstering engagement through its confidence.

The series follows Himari Kino (Hana Shimano), who is entering her first year of high school. Eager, bubbly, and a little spacy, she’s ready for new experiences and another year spent with her friends. The first-year students celebrate the year with a welcome party. The club band SSGirls plays with Yori Asangai (Asami Seto, Justusu Kaisen) on vocals. It’s there where Himari “falls” for Yori. And it’s here where the story fully kickstarts into gear.

Whisper Me A Love Song Episode 1 instills a clever bait and switch. Because of the series’ nature, it’s easy to believe that Himari falling for Yori is romantic. It’s clearly what Yori believes after Himari confesses her feelings to the upper-level student. So much so that Yori, caught off guard, realizes she, too, has feelings for Himari after only one encounter. Because of this, she plans to confess to Himari as well. She almost goes through with it before Himari clarifies that she fell in love with Yori’s talent, not Yori herself, at least for now.

This works because this yuri love story is so clearly moving in the direction of requited love. There’s no queer-baiting. Instead, this decision just allows for more slow-burn romance to take place and character development to unfold. Because, as of now, both Himari and Yori are surface-level. Both fill archetypal spaces of characters we’ve met before. That doesn’t detract from their overall charm but opens up the possibilities for both to grow beyond those confines the more we learn about them.

Whisper Me A Love Song Episode 1

Yori at least has more depth than Himari, whose main personality trait is her overt enthusiasm. Yori, we learn that, despite her talent, she doesn’t enjoy singing in front of others. She’s shy about her gift and would rather play her guitar and sing alone on the rooftop, out of sight of any prying eyes. However, she’s ready to put that fear aside to woo Himari. It’s a relatively bold move for a character who needs to be coaxed into action for most of the episode by her reliable group of friends. From plushies to words of encouragement, her actions stem from the efforts of others.

It’s what makes her a more immediately well-rounded character. She isn’t just beholden to her insecurities. And now that she has a goal in mind of charming Himari, she can play her music for an audience of one. Her character further develops due to the aforementioned friend group, all of whom are established quickly, which aids in giving this world greater depth and insight.

It’s especially striking in comparison to a series such as A Condition Called Love that, two episodes in, has yet to deviate from the main couple. Whisper Me A Love Song Episode 1 defines its world by allowing six different characters enough moments to shine where we understand who they are and the place they take up in the world. The best romane anime have the best ensembles.

The presentation is well done with vibrant color stories that help create a dreamlike aesthetic for these characters. The scene where Himari watches Yori play for the first time perfectly captures the feeling of falling in love with an art form or singer for the first time as the world bends to that figure or voice. The character designs by Minami Yoshida are charming, especially the contrast between Yori and Himari. Their differences complement one another, making for an engaging on-screen duo.

Whisper Me A Love Song Episode 1 is a charming introduction to this world and its characters. With solid visuals and a superb lead in Yori, the series is a welcome addition as it seeks to tell this love story between two girls whose opposites attracts romance promises and an energizing story.
