attack on Titan TACTICS - But Why Tho

Attack on Titan, a series created by Hajime Isayama, has reached incredible heights over these past ten years. Whether it’s through several manga series, films, video games, collectibles, and an anime show, it’s no wonder why more and more people become fans of the series. I’ll admit that I haven’t kept up with every media that has come out of this series, but it’s still been able to deliver memorable moments. The series looks to expand its success with the release of an upcoming mobile game, Attack on Titan TACTICS, which is published by DeNA Co., Ltd.

In Attack on Titan TACTICS, you can create your own elite squad in order to protect your city walls against a very giant threat in real-time battles. Players will need to tactically attack, defend, and counterattack or suffer the Titans’ overwhelming wrath in this Tower Defense RPG. All of your favorite Attack on Titan characters come alive with original voiceovers recorded exclusively for Attack on Titan TACTICS.

Coming into the game, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, especially since I’m not the biggest fan of tower defense RPGs. While I was playing, I was looking for an enjoyable game that captured the overall essence of the show and whether or not it would hold my attention while playing. That said, Attack on Titan TACTICS completely blew my expectations and I’m glad I was able to have these questions answered after playing the demo at this year’s Crunchyroll Expo.

Attack on Titan TACTICS has various elements that make this a great game. One of the biggest upsides to the game is the inclusion of over 38 characters from the series, including Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackermann, Armin Arlelt, and Sasha Braus. They each have their own individual attacks that target specific areas.

I can appreciate that timing in the game means everything, especially since some characters take a bit longer to charge their attacks. Though the demo mainly had a few levels to play from, I’m glad to see that there will be more to choose from. Overall, it’s a game for fans of the series that can be played on-the-go.

Each arena allows players to select up to five characters to choose from to be on their team. The Titans begin moving as soon as the match starts. Players select a character that they want to attack and what specific area they want that character to defend. Each character varies in where they can defend, so make sure to choose the areas wisely. Once a player has been selected, there is a cooldown time, meaning that players will need to wait a specific amount of time until that character can be selected again. There was a tutorial that explained this in full detail, as well as hints once I started playing.

One of the major downsides to a game like this is that it does feel like any other tower defense game out there. I understand that what I played was just a demo, but I can only hope that there’s something about the game that makes it unique. It gives me hope that any unique factor to help this game distinguish itself amongst the other tower defense games does not have a release date yet. It’s not difficult to imagine that the gameplay being a bit repetitive.

You can register to play Attack on Titan TACTICS on the game’s official website.  The game does not have a set release date, but you can check out the official trailer for the game below.
