REVIEW: ‘Dragon Ball Super: Broly’ is a Theater Experience for Fans

Dragon ball Super Broly

I can still remember sitting on my couch when I was younger watching the fight between Goku and Frieza and that’s still my favorite fight of all time. The Dragon Ball franchise has become an integral part of life since childhood. I’d run around pretending I was a Super Saiyan using all sorts of moves, throwing a spirit bomb or two. To think that nearly 20 years later, I’d sit in a movie theatre and watch a Dragon Ball movie, is amazing. Like many fans, I had been eagerly awaiting Dragon Ball Super: Broly since it was announced back in December of 2017.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is directed by Tatsuya Nagamine and written by the legendary Akira Toriyama. The English dub of the film features the amazing voice talents of Sean Schemmel as Goku, Christopher Sabat as Vegeta,  Vic Mignogna as Broly, Christopher Ayres as Frieza, Monica Rial as Bulma, Ian Sinclair as Whis, and Dameon Clarke as Paragus.

The film takes place 41 years after Frieza takes over Planet Vegeta which he later destroys. Goku, Vegeta, Bulma, and Whis are on the hunt for the last Dragon Ball, with the other 6 under Frieza’s control. As they reach the 7th Dragon Ball, our heroes see Frieza’s ship but notice that he’s not the only one on it.

Frieza has managed to find Broly and his father Paragus. The two are Saiyans who had been in exile on a distant planet. Seeking revenge, Broly goes after our main characters Vegeta and Goku. Together, our heroes take part in one of their fiercest battles the franchise has seen yet.

Let me just start off by saying that Super: Broly is a must-see film for Dragon Ball fans around the world. This film includes a reworked version of Broly – since the previous version had not been written by the series creator and writer of this film, Toriyama. While I do like the previous films that revolve around his character, I think this version of Broly is better.

He’s no longer a Saiyan who harbors anger towards Goku for his constant crying while they were in neighboring pods. He has more depth and motive. The movie does him justice, giving him a strong back story that will surely get fans to empathize with him.

The fight choreography in this movie is incredible. Goku and Vegeta have definitely grown in power since the Universe Survival Saga in Dragon Ball Super. I was in awe by how far these two characters have come since their initial fight on Earth. Certain images were leaked about an ability that they use during their fight. But I won’t say what it is, since I want people to enjoy it without spoilers. That being said, even spoiled, it was still amazing to see.

I can tell that a lot of love and dedication went into making these fight scenes look as phenomenal as possible. It was also great to see Goku and Vegeta getting to work together more and more.

All of this being said, I wasn’t really a big fan of how the movie ended. While it does leave room for more potential stories, it seemed like a very quick way to end the story they were telling now. However, the possibilities are endless for where this story can go. Super: Broly shows a lot of character development amongst Goku, Vegeta, and even Broly.

To say that I enjoyed this movie wouldn’t do it justice. Besides my feelings for the ending, I loved everything about this movie. Going to watch this in theaters was an experience all on its own. Fans were going crazy over the fight scenes and laughed during the more comedic moments. It’s honestly awesome to see that so many people still care about this series all these years later.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is out in limited release and for a limited time. Make sure you see it in theaters before it’s gone!
