REVIEW: ‘Daemons of the Shadow Realm’ Episode 2 – “Left and Right”

If Episode 1 obliterated the world we’re first introduced to, Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 2 reconstructs our expectations of the characters themselves. While some, like our de facto protagonists Yuru (Kensho Ono), remain stable, others, such as the seemingly bloodthirsty and vengeful Asa (Yume Miyamoto) and Gabby (Misaki Kuno), are shown in a different light. All in all, this makes for another engaging experience, with solid action and whimsical worldbuilding that help establish the series’ tone and style.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 2 chases the same breakneck speed of the premiere, as Yuru reacts to the appearance of his daemons, Left (Takako Honda) and Right (Rikiya Koyama). But, instead of asking the two to kill Gabby – the one he sees as responsible for the ruin of his village – he instead asks them, rather than orders, to help with protecting the villagers who are still alive. As Right leaves to help protect the village, Left remains in an effort to ward off Gabby’s Daemon while Yuru sets his sight – and aim – on taking her down.

It’s a moment that speaks directly to the kind of character Yuru is and how he fits in with others cut from the same cloth. He refuses to assume any authority over his Daemons, instead realizing their significance to the village and honoring it. He asks for help rather than commands servitude. Yet, despite that respect and his clear care for his departed (fake) sister, he also slips easily into a ruthless, hunter-like sensibility when trying to take Gabby down.

Not a single character is who they appear to be in Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 2.

Yuru aims his arrow

It’s something both Gabby and Asa remark on. They’re able to see just how strong he is and how dangerous a foe, even while Asa is simply happy to realize that Yuru is alive. But it helps shift the perspective just a little, changing how we see all three characters.

Because Gabby is, without question, not a “good character.” Sure, she left the children of the village alive, but she still brutally murdered every other person in her way. Characters who, unless putting up a really good show, seemed wholly ignorant of whatever was going on behind the scenes to protect Yuru’s identity and keep him and Asa separated.

But Gabby also seems to have a very strong relationship with Asa. And Asa seems to dote on and protect Gaby. Both are under the protection of their associate, Jin (Junichi Suwabe), who seems concerned about the injuries Gabby sustained in battle. And Gabby is very much fearful of Yuru, especially when Left can bypass her Daemon’s strength and bodily move it out of her line of defense. Perhaps it is now to be expected for any work by Hiromu Arakawa, but the characters possess layers.

Left and Right allow for a necessary amount of levity to heavier storylines.

Asa crying in Daemons of the Shadow Realm

While Asa and Gabby wait for rescue, Yuru and Dera (Yuichi Nakamura) are racing down the mountain as Yuru gets a rapid crash course of all the falsehoods of his life. It’s been confirmed that he’s been lied to and confirmed that Asa is, in fact, his real sister.

Asa, having escaped the village with their parents ten years prior, explains to Yuru that the Asa he knew was an imposter as an attempt to keep him tied to the village. We don’t know why just yet, but it all paints a dizzying portrait of gray morality, making for an engaging storyline.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 2, despite some plunges into heavy topics, allows for just the right amount of whimsy, too. And so much of this comes down to the delightfully, unexpectedly adorable Left and Right, who inject the story with a lot of playfulness. Neither is over the top, and both are drawn almost like overgrown house cats, curious about the world around them.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 2 delivers commanding action sequences.

The Daemons Left and Right

From Left’s crushing defeat of Gabby’s Daemon, to both Right and Left sitting atop the car as they’re escorted away from the mountain, they possess a charming amount of personality. And it’s further driven home in their interaction with the elusive Daemon, Oshirasama, who is rarely seen by either humans or other Daemons. It’s a reminder of this world’s otherworldly nature and how little we’ve yet to uncover about it.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 2 has some strong action that feels grounded in the characters’ weight and physicality. This is most notable with the fight between Left and Gabby’s Daemon, as we’re left to watch the reverberation of a sturdy kick or the way her muscles flex under pressure. The studio is so frequently reliable that it’s easy to overlook. Yet, the breathless fights that transform into speedy getaways make for a confident reminder of what the artist team is capable of.

While there are plenty of questions left unanswered, “Left and Right” isn’t lacking due to it. Instead, Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 2 continues to establish an exciting tone and engaging storyline that keeps us constantly curious. While Yuru continues to try to acclimate himself to a rapidly changing world, we, too, are asked to keep up.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 2 is available now on Crunchyroll.
