RECAP: ‘Brilliant Minds’ Season 2 Episode 14 — “The Invisible Man”

The thing with procedural shows is that they have classic staples. Whether a precinct goes on lockdown or the power goes out in a government crime lab, the established show framework must, at some point, be flipped on its head by introducing an external element into the regular proceedings. In the case of Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14, titled “The Invisible Man,” it’s a winter storm that traps everyone inside the hospital for one of the season’s best episodes.

A maintenance guy named Amos has a mishap with a nail gun in the basement of Bronx General. Not only does the accident leave a nail inside his head, but another nail hits a gas line and quietly releases gas into the vents of the hospital. As the gas is released, the camera follows it through every vent, allowing us to track all the main players throughout the hospital in a beautiful opening sequence.

Josh (Teddy Sears) is up for official hire as the chief of Bronx General, which means he’ll get to drop the “interim” part of his title. But he has to get to the hospital through this winter storm. However, the gas leak affects him most, leaving him unable to perform surgery on Amos. This leaves Beau (Marco Pigossi) as the only surgeon available to take over, and leaves us with a perfect angsty love triangle to agonize over.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14 offers tense love triangles, descents into madness, and more.

Zachory Quinto, Marco Pigossi in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14

With Wolf (Zachary Quinto), Josh, and Beau all in a room together throughout Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14, the jealousies are obvious, as is the pining. Josh continues to lie to himself about his feelings, and Wolf continues not to fight for what he wants. Beau, bless him, is caught in the middle, a perfectly acceptable guy and surgeon, who also ignores the reddest of red flags, apparently.

Perhaps it’s a little predictable that Josh would say Wolf’s name instead of Beau’s coming out of his near-death experience, but it’s juicy all the same. It’s also confirmation that Josh does indeed still care about, and maybe even still loves, Wolf, after exclusively watching his body language contradict his words for several episodes.

That doesn’t mean that Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14 ends with Josh doing the right thing, though. Beau gives him an out, and Josh doesn’t take it, doubling down on his desire for a family with Beau. If it wasn’t so obvious that Josh is lying to himself, his attempt to start a family would feel extremely out of left field, considering the topic never came up with Wolf.

Instead, it serves as a clever tactic to further isolate Wolf. Starting a family makes Josh officially out of Wolf’s reach. It also acts as a barrier for both of them to be out of tune with the other. Wolf takes Josh’s relationship in stride insofar as he doesn’t fight it, and Josh puts so much distance between himself and Wolf that he’s not noticing how far gone Wolf really is. So, Beau and Josh end Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14 still together, despite the obvious red flags Beau is ignoring.

It’s been said many times before that part of what made Brilliant Minds Season 1 so good was the camaraderie between the interns. But now that Van and Jacob are gone for good, that camaraderie is gone. Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14 tries to recreate it between Ericka, Dana, Silva, and Charlie (Brian Altemus), and it partly succeeds. It does feel nice to have a subset of the cast who can shoot the breeze with one another. Silva provides excellent comic relief throughout this episode. And the Ericka and Dana bestism era continues to reign.

However, the new group dynamic includes Charlie, which throws it off. Charlie’s presence in Brilliant Minds Season 2 has been all sorts of clumsy. He starts off as a one-note villain the second he smirks behind Wolf’s back in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 1, and he’s remained that way through the reveal of his revenge plot against Wolf. But ever since that reveal, he’s been an awkward addition to the newly formed main team.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14 shows that Charlie continues to be the odd one out.

Silva and Charlie in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14

What’s his end goal? Did he get his revenge? Integrating him post-revenge plot reveal has been like trying to finish a puzzle with pieces from an entirely different puzzle. While he seems to have leveled out a bit, there’s still that flash forward to consider, the one where he visits Wolf in Hudson Oaks and calls him the nickname Wolf’s mother calls him. Even if he regrets not being kind to those around him, as he tells Dana, Silva, and Ericka, there’s still a giant question mark surrounding him.

And it’s greatly appreciated that Ericka calls him out on his performative apology to the group, if only to acknowledge the awkwardness of his continued presence after his revenge plot reveal. Even if Charlie truly regrets his attitude, it’s going to take a lot more than a few simple words of apology to make up for his words and actions during the first part of Brilliant Minds Season 2.

The cracks in Wolf’s exterior finally break apart in one of Quinto’s best scenes yet. He finally voices to Carol (Tamberla Perry) the quiet unraveling he’s been experiencing for months. He tells her about Sofia (Sarah Steele) and how he almost killed her by leaving her in the sleep study lab during the carbon monoxide leak.

Carol in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14

It’s a powerful scene, and a great payoff for the long build-up. Even before this scene, those cracks are present throughout Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14, most notably when Dana confronts Wolf about turning Carol in, and he totally blows her off. It’s not very attending-worthy of him.

It also paves the way for the reveal in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14 that Sofia is, in fact, not real. After Wolf’s confession about Sofia, Carol flips through the sleep study data, discovering security footage of Wolf inside the lab by himself during the time he was supposedly in there with Sofia. This means that Wolf himself is likely experiencing insomnia and potentially has all the symptoms that Sofia has been describing.

Wolf hasn’t been doing well for a while, and Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14 hammers that home.

Zachary Quinto in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14

Wolf hasn’t been doing well all season, but this ramp-up likely started when he entered that house in the midseason finale. That’s where we first met Sofia, but considering it’s where Wolf’s father was supposed to be, whatever he really found there probably triggered this final breakdown, and conjured Sofia as a coping mechanism.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 14 is a great episode that finally feels like the story is pushing forward. There’s plenty of comedy, too. Amos is a wonderful addition to the episode, offering some lighthearted moments that stand in contrast to his medical condition. And there’s slight movement on the Thorne and Carol front, courtesy of Amos’s lack of filter.

But now, we’re closer than ever to officially entering the doors of Hudson Oaks. It’s been a long journey; let’s hope there’s time for healing before the season ends.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 will return sometime this year.
