REVIEW: ‘Percy Jackson And The Olympians’ Season 2 Episode 7 “I Go Down With The Ship”

Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 7 is directed by Jason Ensler and written by Tamara Becher-Wilkinson. The show stars Walker Scobell, Leah Sava’ Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, Daniel Diemer, and Dior Goodjohn. The team returns to the cruise ship that holds Luke’s army and Kronos to rescue Annabeth and retrieve the Golden Fleece.

The show wastes no time at all switching islands. By the time Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 7 begins, they have traded Polyphemus’ Island for Long Island, where the Princess Andromeda is docked. It’s an immediate transition that allows the already short runtime to focus on what’s important. This is the shortest episode of the entire season, which is a shame considering how vital this penultimate chapter is. But like the previous episode, it means there’s little waste within the plot.

The structure is fascinating, splitting as the various characters invade the ship. Clarisse is going for the Golden Fleece, whilst Percy is aiming for Annabeth. It allows the story to unfold with a pincer movement, attacking from multiple angles. And back on shore, Grover and Tyson are trying to find a way back to camp. It makes Percy Jackson  Season 2 Episode 7 lively and energetic.

Even within the villains, there’s discontent. Luke’s (Charlie Bushnell) torn between his care for Annabeth and his way against the gods, whilst his disciples are more devoted. It leads to conflicts at two points on the ship simultaneously. Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 7 features two riveting and engaging fight scenes, but neither is quite long enough or dramatic enough.

The cast is all together again, but spread out in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 7.

Grover in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 7

The inclusion on the Golden Fleece, an item from Greek Mythology that can heal any wound, can become a get out of jail free card for the heroes and villains alike. It’s also intriguing that the target that both Percy and Clarisse enter the ship for is switched, subverting their own expectations.

The cast is all together again, but spread out in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 7. Most of the time, they are either alone or with only one other person. Many of the actors are comfortable with that, growing into their roles so much that they can occupy a room on their own. Just because they have been through a lot, the ego of both Percy and Clarisse prevents them from working together. Clarisse has her own quest to fulfil, and is desperate to save the camp and collect the Golden Fleece. Percy is more focused on saving Annabeth.

Each one in this trio is capable of handling their own in a battle, and it’s impressive seeing them make their own plans with ingenuity. Clarisse always looks confident and ready, eager for a fight. Luke and his second-in-command, Alison (Beatrice Kitsos), are intriguing in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 7. Luke isn’t quite the imposing, revered leader as expected. Instead, his care for Annabeth continues to interfere. It elicits some sympathy for the head of the rebellion.

In contrast, his lieutenant is an example of a Demigod who is much more corrupt and murderous. She is more terrifying and disturbing than Luke, although the latter is the one who lands the most dangerous blow. Tyson is stuck with Grover back on shore, which is frustrating. The cyclops has proven to be powerful and intelligent, but is frequently sidelined with nothing to do.

The fight scenes have some great moves, but they never feel as exciting as they could.

Percy and Annabeth in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 7

The production is proficient and capable, but can always be better in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 7. The set on the ship looks fantastic, but it does feel empty and barren. There are only a few of Luke’s army left aboard the Princess Andromeda, so there aren’t many bodies about. The best designs are those of the huge, fireball-throwing, cannibalistic monsters that are working with Luke. They are huge, Viking-like beings with terrific makeup and other attachments.

The fight scenes in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 7 have some great moves, but they never feel as exciting as they could. They don’t have the time to be expansive, and the arguments aren’t particularly extravagant. They still have some great moments, but could certainly hit another level.

Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 7 fulfills a prophecy. The one word that resonates through this episode is confidence. The heroes are so confident. Annabeth, Percy, and Clarisse are all incredible spearheads, strong and passionate and ready to die for their quests. The performances have been the most noticeable improvement from season one, and they have genuinely grown into the rules. The other recurring positive is the emphasis on the ending, which always ensures it’s memorable and breathtaking. The finale of this chapter is gratifying, as the characters start to come home.

Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 7 is available on Disney+ and Hulu, with new episodes releasing every Wednesday.
