REVIEW: ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Season 2 Episode 6 – “Nobody Gets the Fleece”

Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6 is directed by Catriona McKenzie and written by Albert Kim. The show stars Walker Scobell, Leah Sava’ Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, Daniel Diemer, and Dior Goodjohn. Percy and Annabeth arrive on Polyphemus’ island to try and save Grover and Clarisse and retrieve the golden fleece.

Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6 begins ominously. At first, the plot moves to Tyson, who was completely absent in the previous episode. It’s the initial sign that the cast is starting to regroup. Then come dreams and concerns about the camp’s future and what’s to come. It’s a dark and sinister opening. The start of Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6 is slow, a recurring aspect of this second season: it always takes some time to build up momentum. The runtime is slightly shorter than other episodes, but once the Demigods make it to the island, you don’t feel shortchanged. There’s so much happening and very little waste.

The island becomes a rescue operation fused with a heist. It’s energetic and exciting, with a monstrous villain that controls everything on the island. Despite his blindness and size, Polyphemus (Aleks Paunovic), the cyclops, can appear anywhere and creates panic every time he does. There’s a mix of comedy, chaos, genuine threat, and drama in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6. So many plotlines converge on the island, including Luke (Charlie Bushnell), who has begun putting his plans into place. The ending is crucial to the season’s plot, as multiple prophecies and fears come true, but it also features incredibly touching moments.

The cast is all brought together on the island in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6.

Clarisse in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6

The characters and performances are terrific again, but there’s one major flaw in the dialogue. After many split stories and individual quests, the cast is all brought together on the island in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6. It means you get some wholesome exchanges between Percy and Grover, who meet for the first time in the entire second season. There’s a reminder of just how great they are together. There’s also some great chemistry between Clarisse and Grover, because they’re so different. Grover is timid and chatty, whilst Clarisse is fierce and prefers action.

Luke, the leader of a rebellion and the season’s main villain, re-emerges, too. The conversations between Annabeth and Luke are perhaps better than those between Luke and Percy, because of their history. Annabeth remembers Thalia, too, and both are exploiting her intentions to try to win the argument. Annabeth talks about the change in Luke since being corrupted by Kronos, and the actor is trying to show that darker, nefarious side. But we haven’t seen enough to see a full descent.

Annabeth and Percy are terrific leaders in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6, actually coming up with ideas and plans, alongside Clarisse, at the bottom of Polyphemus’ cave. The multiple voices and the return of many missing figures make this episode feel busy and lively.

Polyphemus has a terrific design, enormous, with a blind eye and a tremendous physical presence.

Percy in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6

Polyphemus is one of the best enemies within the entire show so far. He is menacing and terrifying, with a deep voice that both mocks and threatens. His island is his domain, and he’s got a cunning mind used to lure and trap those who set foot on it. But when talking to Tyson, who is also a cyclops, there are parts of the dialogue that are touching.

The major flaw in the dialogue in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6 is the amount of it once Percy and Annabeth land on the island. Before they approach, there is a whole conversation about how sensitive Polyphemus’s hearing is. They say he can hear a pin drop, so they have to be silent and quick. So when they arrive on the island, they spend so much time talking. It’s an infuriating breaking of the rule the writers created only moments before, and the idea rears its head with every word uttered.

The production is brilliant and understated, given that it spends almost the entire Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6 on the island. It’s a small place, which makes its geography easy to understand. We can see where the fleece is, where Polyphemus will appear from, and the cave within the hill. Polyphemus has a terrific design. He’s enormous, with a blind eye and a tremendous physical presence. Part of what makes him so creepy is his mimicry of other voices, as seen in a horrifying display. The sound mixing in this moment is sensational. Some of the injuries that occur are surprisingly bloody and brutal, a world where there are consequences of tangling with monsters.

Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6 is a major turning point.

Annabeth in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6

Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6 is a major turning point. It’s a self-contained story in many ways, set on an island that holds great importance to the plot. Some friends need saving, and a quest owl that needs to be retrieved. And a monster that stands in the way of it all. From the minute Percy and Annabeth stand on the island, the plot is fluid and frantic, with serious ramifications. Everyone’s in the same place, and that creates so much chemistry and tension. Every episode of this show feels like its own adventure, making the chapters unique. But there’s always a brilliant ending that flows into the next.

Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 6 is available on Disney+ and Hulu, with new episodes releasing every Wednesday.
