The mysteries continue on Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 13. Well, one of the mysteries, anyway. Sofia (Sarah Steele) and Wolf’s (Zachary Quinto) chemistry is really great—they bounce off each other really well. Maybe a little well, as their newfound friendship might encourage the toxic behaviors they both possess. The rest of the episode feels like classic Brilliant Minds, even if it centers around AI. Guess everyone has to jump on that bandwagon.
A college student falls into catatonia, prompting Wolf to investigate. Part of Brilliant Mind’s appeal in Season 1 was its clever visual storytelling, which showcased the patient’s experiences and symptoms. They’ve cut back on that a bit this season, but Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 13 brings it back to tell Nora’s story.
Once Dana and Ericka figure out that Nora’s catatonia might have been caused by an AI chatbot called Virginia, Wolf scours through pages and pages of the chat transcript. Nora’s chats with Virginia come alive in Wolf’s mind. Even though the show gives Virginia a human voice and body by having an actor stand in for the visual storytelling, Brilliant Minds does a great job of still maintaining the fact that Nora is confiding in a robot, meant to feed her things she wants to hear.
Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 13 takes on AI.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 13 showcases the isolation that AI can cause, especially when people are confronted with big, emotionally devastating news. Through the transcripts, Wolf discovers that Nora’s sister was diagnosed with cancer a few months prior. With Miles away at college, Nora started to distance herself from her friends and sorority, talking to Virginia as a confidant but also as a collaborator to build a time machine and go back to a time before her sister had cancer.
The quick spiral led to a catatonic state, brought on by AI psychosis. Through Wolf and Carol’s (Tamberla Perry) assessments and treatment plan, Nora learns how to connect with the people around her again, and ditches the AI completely, reentering a world that grief, isolation, and artificial intelligence took her from.
That isolation theme crops up in Wolf’s story, as well. We know where he ends up eventually, but the cracks are really starting to show in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 13. The journey is still very much in motion, though, with new dots along the road map popping up constantly.
Carol expresses concern for Wolf; probably the first time he’s hearing it.

Wolf’s work with Sofia is separated from his work at Bronx General. In fact, no one seems to know about Sofia, her connection to Wolf’s father, or that Wolf is treating her. Josh (Teddy Sears) knocks on Wolf’s office door to ask about the patient from last episode, prompting a little domestic fight. Even though Sofia is in Wolf’s office, he doesn’t remark upon her.
Part of me can see Sofia as a manifestation of Wolf’s grief and isolation. His own Virginia, if you will. Whether Sofia is real or not, he’s still isolating himself from his friends. When he discovers that Dana turned Carol in, it sends him over the edge, leading to a fight with Carol, during which she expresses concern for Wolf.
It’s probably the first time anyone has said this directly to him, and he looks shaken. He goes out drinking with Sofia, and she agrees with everything he says (as Virginia did with Nora), while Wolf’s narration warns of ominous signs being missed.
The Hudson Oaks flashforward is the most significant yet.

A flashforward to a week later shows Wolf arriving at what appears to be Hudson Oaks. “A week” is quite a significant jump in our flashforward timeline, so this isn’t, I believe, when he checks in. Instead, he’s there to see Sofia, who’s gotten significantly worse.
He tells her he’s there to save her. Maybe that’s why he checks himself in eventually. There seemed to be some element of undercover work if Wolf’s phone call to Josh in an earlier flashforward scene was any indication, but still. Mysteries still abound.
Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 13 also resolves the Dana and Carol tension by having them sit down to chat. Dana decides to come clean since Carol is going to be her mentor for her grant. Carol confesses that she knew it was Dana, and the two mutually agree that what Dana did was right, and that they’re both willing to work together.
Josh and Wolf seem over for good.

Elsewhere, Carol also tells Wolf that Josh and his new boyfriend, whom Wolf used to date and only broke up because they disagreed about kids. But now they seem to be on the same page about kids, meaning that the Wolf and Josh’s relationship really seems like it’s over.
And yet. Josh didn’t tell his new boyfriend about his previous relationship with Wolf. And Silva’s meddling in Josh’s love life sends him into a denial spiral, so clearly there’s something still there.
Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 13 draws some really interesting comparisons between Nora’s vehicle of isolation (the AI) and Wolf’s isolation via Sofia, while also finally letting someone voice concern for Wolf.
Brilliant Minds Season 2 airs new episodes on Monday nights on NBC and is available to stream the next day on Peacock.
