REVIEW: ‘Spy x Family’ Season 3 Episode 11 – “Extreme Level 3 Situation”

Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 11, “Extreme Level 3 Situation,” sees both Loid (Takuya Eguchi, See You Tomorrow at the Food Court) and Yuri (Kenshô Ono, Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective) summoned to their respective agencies as a situation threatens to expose Westalia’s operations, including Stryx. Both agencies will do whatever they have to find a favorable resolution to the unfolding emergency.

Before the plot hits and the spies start to scramble, Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 11 opens with a quiet morning at the Forger home. Anya happily munches on her breakfast as she awaits Becky’s arrival; Becky is taking her to the zoo today. As she sparkles with childhood’s excitement, we also learn that Yor (Saori Hayami, Delicious in Dungeon) still hasn’t fully recovered from her overindulgence the night before.

Yor’s part in Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 11 is the episode’s low point. Still obsessed with having gripes with her husband so she will be viewed as “normal,” Yor makes several attempts to pick fights with Loid, each becoming more annoying than the last. Making matters even worse is the unexpected arrival of Yuri, who quickly dogpiles on Loid, though he has no idea what Yor is actually complaining about.

Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 11 starts things off rough but eventually finds its footing.

Yor in Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 11

The obnoxious attempts at humor are broken when Loid gets a call from the “hospital” about an emergency. Shortly thereafter, Yuri is contacted as well, forcing him to bail on his latest attempt to ruin Loid and Yor’s marriage, leaving his sister to eventually sober up and realize how ridiculous she’s been.

Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 11 ramps up into its evolving crisis nicely. As both sides scramble, the presentation and voice work do a great job of selling the spy-thriller energy of the situation without ever straying from the general lighter tone of the series. There is a focus and intensity from all parties involved as they set out to claim the contested prize. The approach from both sides highlights a great decision in the series design. One that could’ve easily not been there.

What builds the tension is that both sides are shown to be extremely competent. Given the series’s comical nature, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if the narrative depicted the Security Services as bunglers compared to WISE. The choice to allow their foes to be actual threats creates a great amount of impact, as it feels like even the legendary Twilight could fall short at any given moment, thanks to the multilayered schemes of his adversaries.

The cliffhanger we get sets things up absolutely perfectly for the next episode.

The tension builds up to an exciting cliffhanger where just such an eventuality seems possible. With Loid in imminent peril, caught in the web of one of the Security Service’s clever plots, the episode leaves the story in a perfect spot to help build excitement for the next episode. Though there is one small scene that remains to play out. Following the end credits, we get to stop in on Anya and Becky (Emiri Kato, Granblue Fantasy: Relink) as they enjoy their day at the zoo.

The choice to put this scene after the credits gives it just enough space to separate it from the core narrative. Rather than feeling like a jarring switch in tone and focus, the silly moment featuring two children’s excitement feels like a well-earned release valve for the tension.

Despite a rough start, Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 11 manages to deliver a great opening to the newest major plot beat for the series. With the stakes high and no room for error, it will be interesting to see whether Loid and WISE can save the day.

Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 11 is streaming now on Crunchyroll.
