As the last episode before midseason break, Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 10, “The Resident,” reveals some of the tricks up its sleeve, but the answer isn’t wholly satisfying. The episode brings the interns back together, seemingly for good, and Ericka (Ashleigh LaThrop) gets a major win. It’s not the best episode, but it’s not bad either.
Charlie Porter’s (Brian Altemus) presence on Wolf’s (Zachary Quinto) neuro team this season is best described as a thorn in the side. At worst, he’s a frustrating distraction from the characters we fell in love with during Brilliant Minds Season 1. Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 10 finally answers why he’s been so slimy.
On both the technical and narrative levels, the reveal is quite lackluster. A revenge plot against Wolf over events that took place years ago is incredibly low-effort in crafting a good villain. It also makes Charlie very one-note. His grief over his mother is obviously valid, but his anger at Wolf feels really unjustified. Even though we unknowingly learned a little about Charlie’s mom in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 6, there isn’t enough emotional investment to feel any which way about Charlie’s revenge.
A holiday gala gives everyone the excuse to dress up in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 10.

Wolf’s mistake with Charlie’s mother doesn’t reach “earning himself an arch enemy” level at all. As a junior resident, he did all he could to save Charlie’s mom. The issue, the thing he feels guilty about, is just that he gave Charlie and his mom false hope. It might be more understandable if Charlie weren’t a doctor himself, but he is, and should understand the learning process of crafting bedside manner and how to deliver bad news.
While something’s been bubbling under the surface with Charlie all season, the way it’s finally revealed happens out of nowhere. A holiday gala allows everyone to dress up, but it ends with Charlie abruptly taking the stage to accept an award and then vaguely telling his story in a way that only Wolf would understand the implications. Despite all that buildup, the reveal is hardly earned.
And somehow, this is supposed to all lead to Wolf trapped inside Hudson Oaks, which doesn’t get much movement here at all. These mysteries are starting to drag, and not in a good way. The rest of the episode that doesn’t involve Charlie is wonderful. Ericka and the rest of the team continue to work on getting Sam on the liver transplant list.
Jacob is finally back with the neuro team.

This brings in the whole cavalry, including Jacob (Spence Moore II), who’s officially done with his ED rotation and back with the neuro team, and Michelle, who juggles her feelings for Van while also tracking down any sort of evidence to make Sam look good on paper. Josh (Teddy Sears) handles an emergency surgery for Sam and also tells the team that the head of the donor list will be at the holiday gala if they want to try to get him to change his mind about Sam in person.
It’s such a treat to see the whole team working together again. Especially Jacob, whose assignment in the emergency department has unfairly lessened his role this season. He’s excited to be back, too, but he also admits to Van that when he was home for the holidays, an opportunity to work as a neurologist in sports medicine came up. If they’re about to send Jacob away just as we get him back with the neuro team, I’ll riot. But there’s one thing he knows for sure he doesn’t want to leave, and that’s Ericka.
Even though his screen time this season has been few and far between, Jacob’s scenes with Ericka have been a welcome addition to this season, full of caring, understanding, and support. The two finally seal their mutual feelings for each other with a kiss, and it seems that Jacob is indeed staying. At least, for now, anyway.
The larger Hudson Oak storyline still hasn’t moved forward much by midseason.

The culmination of Sam’s story takes us to the holiday gala, where the team gathers to schmooze and look glamorous. Ericka steals herself to confront the head of the donation list, but the man shoots her down. Wolf then takes the opportunity to hop on stage and deliver one of his best moments in the entire show.
Not only is it such a banger move, but it’s also Wolf supporting his team, particularly Ericka, and all the efforts they’ve made to save Sam. Wolf announces to a room full of rich donors the generosity of the head of the donor list for saving Sam’s life, forcing the guy’s hand to allow Sam a chance to live.
While these other aspects of Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 10 elevate the episode quite a bit, it’s not enough to move the needle forward in the larger Hudson Oak storyline. It’s a mystery that’s been building all season, yet the midseason finale offers very few answers.
Charlie opens a wound for Wolf with information about his father.

The seed planting doesn’t go deep either, only lightly setting up the dynamics we know are about to take shape. Carol (Tamberla Perry) and Josh only now express a concern about Wolf in the very last moments of the midseason, and Wolf’s exterior starts cracking as the episode ends.
It’s still not clear exactly which direction we’re heading. Charlie opens a wound for Wolf, but then presents another old one when he tells Wolf exactly where his father has been this whole time. Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 10 ends with Wolf heading to the address Charlie gave him, but who’s there, and in what state are they in? Those answers, unfortunately, only January knows.
Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 10 wonderfully concludes Sam’s story by bringing the entire team back together, but suffers in filling in the blanks of its larger seasonal narrative.
Brilliant Minds Season 2 returns to NBC on Jan. 5, 2026.
