Halloween is right around the corner, and Red Barrels is ramping up the horror just in time for it. The developer announced a gruesome Player-vs-Player (PvP) mode for The Outlast Trials called “Invasion Mode.” Revealed today during IGN Fan Fest, the major update, which is the centerpiece of the upcoming Season 4, will introduce the Invasion Experimental Therapy on October 21, 2025.

The new mode heightens the game’s signature suspense and violence by allowing players to infiltrate their peers’ Trials as an Imposter, sabotaging and slaying them with a knife. Let’s dig into what you can expect.

What is Invasion Mode in The Outlast Trials?

The new Invasion Mode flips the script on the established co-op horror formula. Murkoff’s ever-gracious “Father” Easterman is providing his “children” with the tools they need to truly “sympathize” with one another, which, in the world of The Outlast Trials, translates to knives, security cameras, and disguises made of human flesh. As the studio puts it in the press release, “Escape was the injury. Relapse was triaged. Now… It’s time for the surgery.”

You can access Invasion Mode through the Sleep Room Terminals to join a Trial as either a standard Reagent or the invading Imposter, but only a limited number of Imposters can invade at once. While in the queue, you can still participate by becoming the eyes and ears for murderous teammates, assisting in the surveillance effort. Each Imposter will get a chance to invade the Trial as their peers succeed in their sabotage—or die trying.

Invasion Mode Key Features

The core gameplay centers on stealth, subterfuge, and close-quarters combat, promising an intense, high-stakes experience for both the hunter and the hunted.

The key features of Invasion Mode, as shared by the developer, are:

  • Become the Hunter: Stalk your prey from the shadows, utilizing stealth and subterfuge to sneak up on unsuspecting Reagents before going in for the kill.
  • Surveil the Trials: Plan your route and attack strategy by carefully considering surveillance camera footage. You and your fellow Imposters can work together to coordinate attacks.
  • Don a Deadly Disguise: Dress yourself in the garb and skin of your targets to gain their trust. Then, when the moment’s right…
  • Stab Them In the Back: Close-quarters combat is the only rule of engagement. You’ll need to outwit your opponent with multiple blade strikes or a single, lethal stab attack. One slip-up means certain death, ratcheting up the intensity in the high-pressure Trial arenas.

  • A Time-Limited Catalog of Items
  • Two new MK-Challenges: “Beguile the Children” and “Investigate the Minotaur”
  • The debut of the new In-Game Store

What is The Outlast Trials?

Haven’t played the game just yet? Well, here’s what you need to know. The Outlast Trials is the third installment in Red Barrels’ critically acclaimed psychological horror series. It is a 4-player co-op game, complete with escape room-style puzzles, where you must avoid the twisted victims of Murkoff’s experiments by using a combination of stealth, speed, and teamwork.

Players have commented on its unique blend of survival horror and online escape room as one of the key factors that keep them engaged. The Outlast Trials challenges players with Aperture Science-style tests by way of Jigsaw. Complete Trials, return to your cell, upgrade your therapies, and steel your nerves to face horrors beyond your imagination.

As for the story? Well, the game is set in 1959 at the height of the Cold War, and human guinea pigs are involuntarily recruited to test advanced methods of mind control in their nightmare facility.

What is the Invasion Mode release date?

The Outlast Trials will release on October 21, 2025, just 10 days before Halloween. As part of the Season 4 Update, you can look forward to everything discussed above kicking off on that date.
