Tate Multimedia and developer Progress_Check announced its debut game, Monolith: Rogue TD. A genre-blending roguelike tower defense title, it tasks players to take on the role of the ultimate antagonist. Where othe video games task you with saving the world this one promises that you’ll get to consume it as the titlular Monolith.

As the celestial, corrupting force crashing down from the heavens,  Monolith: Rogue TD aims to combine the strategic depth of a tower defense title while also playing in the roguelike structure sandbox. This title has the goal of challenging players to strategically bend the terrain, outsmart defenders, and reshape every world, oh, and to do it on both PC and the Nintendo Switch.

While Tate Multimedia has been publishing titles for the past 25 years, Progess_Check is a studio run by a pair of siblings and Monolith is their debut title. Progress_Check was founded as a studio dedicated to innovation, creativity, and meaningful storytelling in game development, according to the studio’s description.

What is Monolith: Rogue TD?

To put it simply, Monolith: Rogue TD is looking to throw players into the dark side of strategy. It flips the classic tower defense script, putting players in control of the overwhelming threat rather than the valiant protectors. You’re strategy isn’t about heroism and defense, instead, your sole purpose is to descend upon unsuspecting worlds, spread corruption, and extinguish all resistance.

While the premise of the game is unique, the game’s strategic game loop isn’t forgetting the essentials to the genres that its subverting. Players must strategically summon towers, fiercely defend their corrupt core, and actively transform the battlefield as they face off against desperate defenders and self-righteous bosses. It’s a tower defense game, but if the towers were evil and destroying the world that is.
