Magic The Gathering released a collaboration with Spider-Man, featuring a whole host of the web-slinger’s friends and foes. The number of cards that were released is a deep cut into the history of one of Marvel’s oldest and most publicized heroes. Below is a list of some of the white creature cards, providing insight as to who they are and where they belong in the world of Spider-Man.

Card Type: Legendary Creature – Human Citizen

Card Text: Whenever another creature you control enters, you gain 1 life. If it’s a Spider, put a +1/-1 counter on it.

First Appearance: Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962).

Peter Parker’s most reliable and long-suffering guardian, Aunt May, has been through it all with him. Losing her husband, Ben, she then lived with Peter as he became a crime fighter. She has patched him up and been there for the young man as he’s grown, from a boy into a man. She has much more resilience than one might assume with a frail older woman, having fought back against the occasional supervillain.

Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer (5 White)

The card for Anti-Venom from the Magic The Gathering collaboration with Spider-Man

Card Type: Legendary Creature – Symbiote Hero

Card Text: When Anti-Venom enters, if he was cast, return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield.

First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man Issue #569 (2008).

Anti-Venom was created from the cells of Eddie Brock. Brock has his cancer treated by Mister Negative, which subsequently created a new, white Symbiote. This version of Brock was insane, sometimes fighting on the side of Spider-Man and the Avengers and other times battling against them. But his unique physiology happened to be helpful. He can cure impurities in bodies, from radiation to diseases and other ailments.

Arachne, Psionic Weaver (2 Colorless, 1 White)

The card for Arachne from the Magic The Gathering collaboration with Spider-Man

Card Type: Legendary Creature – Spider Human Hero

Card Text: Web-slinging

As Arachne enters, look at an opponent’s hand, then choose a card type other than creature.

Spells of the chosen type cost 1 (colorless) more to cast

First appearance: Marvel Super Heroes Secret War #6 (1984).

Julia Carpenter possesses a power that sets her apart from any other spider. The second Spider-Woman, Julia, has psionic webbing and abilities. She took on the name Arachne, but later became much more well-known. When the original Madame Web died, she passed her precognitive skills, title, and blindness. She now helps protect the multiverse by sensing the future.

Flash Thompson, Spider-Fan (1 Colorless, 1 White)

The card for Flash Thompson from the Magic The Gathering collaboration with Spider-Man

Card Type: Legendary Creature – Human Citizen

Card Text: When Flash Thompson enters. Choose one or both.

Heckle – Tap target creature.

Hero Worship – Untap target creature.

First appearance: Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962).

Eugene ‘Flash’ Thompson started out as an adversary to Peter Parker. He plagued Peter in high school, bullying the young man relentlessly. Despite hating Peter and tormenting him, he was a fanatic for Spider-Man. But it was Gwen Stacy, Peter’s girlfriend, who brokered peace between them. Flash and Peter ended up becoming best friends, and Flash became a soldier and a symbiotic superhero himself.

Daily Bugle Reporters (3 Colorless, 1 White)

The card for the Daily Bugle Reporters from the Magic The Gathering collaboration with Spider-Man

Card Type: Creature – Human Citizen

Card Text: When this creature enters, choose one.

Puff Piece – Put a +1/-1 counter on each of up to two target creatures.

Investigative Journalism – Return target creature card with mana value 2 or less from your graveyard to your hand.

The Daily Bugle has been a staple and landmark in New York City since Spider-Man began swinging through the streets. With Peter first working in the bullpen, the likes of J. Jonah Jameson, Joe “Robbie” Robertson, and Betty Brant became household names and crucial to his life. They raised him, helped him, and hindered him at times. They have been the target of attacks from superheroes and the epicenter of events. As time went on, the bullpen evolved and changed with the times, with even the children of the precious staff vying for positions.

Selfless Police Captain (1 Colorless, 1 White)

The card for Selfless Police Captain from the Magic The Gathering collaboration with Spider-Man

Card Type: Creature – Human Detective

Card Text: This creature enters with a +1/+1 counter on it. When this creature leaves the battlefield, put its +1/+1 counters on target creature you control.

First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #56 (1967).

This card is based on George Stacy. A long-serving NYPD Captain, Stacy was also the father of Gwen Stacy, Peter’s girlfriend. This created a friendly relationship, as George would help Spider-Man stop villains before they met at dinner. George was noble, hardworking, and caring, especially about his daughter, and was killed saving a child’s life in a battle between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus.

Silver Sable, Mercenary Leader (2 Colorless, 1 White)

The card for Silver Sable from the Magic The Gathering collaboration with Spider-Man

Card Type: Legendary Creature – Human Mercenary Hero

Card Text: When Silver Sable enters, put a +1/+1 counter on another target creature.

Whenever Silver Sable attacks, target modified creature you control gains lifelink until end of turn. Equipment, Auras you control, and counters are modifications.

First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #265 (1985).

Silver Sable is not only a mercenary but also the leader of the fictional country Symkaria. This gave her a unique quality, as she was a diplomatic figure as well as a brilliant martial artist. Her allegiances have always been dedicated to finances and to her nation, but she also has a certain soft spot for the wallcrawler. Whenever they team up, there is certainly flirtation, which has even progressed into Silver Sable having genuine feelings for Spider-Man.

Spider-UK (3 Colorless, 1 White)

The card for Spider-UK from the Magic The Gathering/Spider-Man collaboration

Card Type: Legendary Creature – Spider Human Hero

Card Text: Web-Slinging (2 Colorless, 1 White)

At the beginning of your end step, if two or more creatures entered the battlefield under your control this turn, you draw a card and gain 2 life.

First appearance: Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (2014).

A Spider-Man from the British Isles, William Braddock, is also a member of the multiverse, protecting the Captain Britain Corps. He travelled the universes, joining forces with other spiders to battle the vampiric Inheritors. And when his universe was destroyed, he would jump to any Earth that was in need of a Spider-Man.

Starling, Aerial Ally (4 Colorless, 1 White)

Card Type: Legendary Creature – Human Hero

Card Text: Flying

When Starling enters, another target creature you control gains flying until end of turn.

Tiana Toomes is the granddaughter of Adrian Toomes, aka The Vulture. Vulture always looked after his granddaughter, including making her a version of his Vulture wings. Tiana has decided to be much more heroic than her grandfather, joining the Champions and teaming up with Miles Morales. Starling and Miles became so close that they revealed their secret identities to each other and are in a relationship.

Wild Pack Squad (2 Colorless, 1 White)

Card Type: Creature – Human Mercenary

Card Text: At the beginning of combat on your turn, up to one target creature gains first strike and vigilance until end of turn.

First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #265 (1985).

The Wild Pack is Silver Sable’s team of mercenaries, accompanying her on her missions outside of Symkaria. The roster has changed many times over the years, from members who have not aged well over the generations to soldiers, symbiotes, and superhumans.

Mary Jane (2 Colorless, 1 White)

The second love of Peter Parker’s life. After the death of Gwen Stacy, Peter and MJ became much closer, and they fell in love. Mary Jane Watson has often led a life of trying to achieve stardom as a model, actress, and even executive assistant to Tony Stark. When married to Spider-Man, Mary Jane was with him through the worst, before their marriage was sacrificed to save Aunt May’s life. She had even taken up the superhero life herself, first as Jackpot, and has now bonded with the Venom symbiote.

City Pigeon (1 White)
