Wizards of the Coast has brought Spider-Man and Magic The Gathering together with a selection of cards based on the Webslinger and his world. With an abundance of characters included, some readers may not be familiar with or want to learn more about certain characters. This list features both artifacts and multicolored creature cards, explaining who the characters are and their first appearances in comics.
Iron Spider, Stark Upgrade (3 Colorless)
Card Type: Legendary Artifact Creature – Spider Hero
Card Text: Vigilance
Tap: Put a +1/+1 counter on each artifact creature and/or Vehicle you control.
2 Colorless, Remove two +1/+1 counters from among artifacts you control: Draw a card.
First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #529 (2006).
When Spider-Man started working for Tony Stark, there were more perks to the job than expected. One was the Iron Spider suit. An incredibly durable suit of armor, as opposed to the literal threads he usually wears, the Iron Spider suit also had multiple high-tech layers, a glider, adjustable lenses, and, most famously, the extra tentacles/waldoes. These were versatile both in battle and in movement. Although Peter didn’t wear the uniform for long, it has since made future appearances by both him and others looking to steal or make copies.
Living Brain, Mechanical Marvel (4 Colorless)
Card Type: Legendary Artifact Creature – Robot Villain
Card Text: At the beginning of combat on your turn, target none-Equipment artifact you control becomes an artifact creature with base power and toughness 3/3 until end of turn. Untap it.
First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #8 (1963).
Outdated by today’s standards, the Living Brain was staggering when first introduced. Created to be able to answer any question, the Living Brain malfunctioned and went on a rampage instead. Spider-Man managed to destroy the giant computer, but it was rebuilt and used for criminal actions many times after that. When Otto Octavius became the Superior Spider-Man, he stole the Living Brain and used him as a lab assistant.
Mechanical Mobster (3 Colorless)
Card Type: Artifact Creature – Human Robot Villain
Card Text: When this creature enters, exile up to one target card from a graveyard. Target creature you control connives. (Draw a card, then discard a card. If you discarded a nonland card, put a +1/+1 counter on that creature.)
First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #73 (1969).
More machine than man at this point, Silvio Manfredi had always been afraid of death. He’s over a hundred years old, but has been upgrading himself all that time. He slowly built himself a cybernetic body, with only his head remaining human. This body gave the gangster incredible strength, and he led the Maggia gang for decades. For a while, Silvermane’s body was destroyed, reducing him to just a head that could be carried around and fought over.
Spider-Slayer (2 Colorless)
Card Type: Legendary Artifact Creature – Human Villain
Card Text: Whenever Spider-Slayer deals damage to a Spider, destroy that creature.
6 Colorless, Exile this card from your graveyard: Create two tapped 1/1 colorless Robot artifact creature tokens with flying.
First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man Annual #19 (1985).
There have been more Spider-Slayers than The Fast and the Furious movies, but Alistair Smythe is the most notable one. His father, Spencer, invented the concept with J. Jonah Jameson, which were robots that are designed to kill Spider-Man. But Alistair took it a step further, transforming himself into the Spider-Slayer. He built himself a bio-organic carapace, outfitted with blades and claws, alongside other robots. And ironically, Jameson started an obsession that led to the death of his wife.
Araña, Heart of the Spider (1 Colorless, 1 Red, 1 White)
Card Type: Legendary Creature – Spider Human Hero
Card Text: Whenever you attack, put a +1/+1 counter on target attacking creature.
Whenever a modified creature you control deals combat damage to a player, exile the top card of your library. You may play that card this turn. (Equipment, Auras you control, and counters are modifications.)
First appearance: Amazing Fantasy #1 (2004).
One of many Spider-Girls. Aña ‘Anya’ Corazon initially got her powers from a mystical tattoo. This gave her similar abilities to other Spiders, and she developed a Bola that functioned like Spider-Man’s webs. Now going by the name Araña, Anya has been both an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and a student of Avengers Academy, massively separating from the life of Peter Parker.
Carnage (2 Colorless, 1 Black, 1 Red)
Card Type: Legendary Creature – Symbiote Villain
Card Text: Trample
When Carnage enters, return a target creature card with a mana value of 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. It gains “This creature attacks each combat if able” and “When this creature deals combat damage to a player, sacrifice it.”
Mayhem (1 Black, 1 Red)
First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #360 (1992).
The Carnage Symbiote spawned from Venom, attaching itself to sadistic serial killer Cletus Cassidy. This drove the Symbiote insane, creating the most sadistic and bloodthirsty of their species. Carnage is even more powerful than Venom, able to form weapons with his tendrils, such as blades, faces, and other tools of death. Carnage is obsessed with death, with a taste for flesh and murder. Every storyline he’s involved with includes copious amounts of blood and entrails. And even when the Carnage Symbiote leaves Cassidy, that insanity and despicable intent still follow.
Cosmic Spider-Man (1 White, 1 Blue, 1 Black, 1 Red, 1 Green)
Card Type: Legendary Creature – Spider Human Hero

At the beginning of combat on your turn, other Spiders you control gain flying, first strike, trample, lifelink, and haste until end of turn.
First appearance: Spectacular Spider-Man #158 (1989).
The Enigma Force is a cosmic being and a universal force. It possesses beings for a short time and turns them into Captain Universe, a superhero with limitless power. With it, Spider-Man could match the likes of the Hulk, Doctor Doom, and Magneto. Although our Spider-Man gave up that power, there is one in the Multiverse that retained those powers, making him the most powerful Spider-Man of all. For now, information on the character and the card can be found here.
Gallant Citizen (2 Green/White Hybrid)
Card Type: Creature – Human Citizen
Card Text: When this creature enters, draw a card.
First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #1 (1963).
This card is based on John Jameson, astronaut and son of J. Jonah Jameson. Much of the reason why Jameson Sr. despises Spider-Man is because he was jealous, believing that the American hero that his son should be given the plaudits instead. Little did he know that John would become a superhero himself. The astronaut found a gemstone on the Moon, which turned him into a werewolf. Jameson now goes by the imaginatively named Man-Wolf.
Green Goblin (1 Colorless, 1 Blue, 1 Black, 1 Red)
Card Type: Legendary Creature – Goblin Human Villain
Card Text: Flying, menace
Spells you cast from your graveyard cost 2 Colorless less to cast.
Goblin Formula – Each nonland card in your graveyard has mayhem. The mayhem cost is equal to its mana cost (You may cast a card from your graveyard for its mayhem cost if you discarded it this turn. Timing rules still apply.)

Norman Osborn ingested the Goblin Serum and became the Green Goblin, Spider-Man’s most famous villain. He took the mantle of Green Goblin and became just as dangerous and insane as his father was.
Jackal, Genius Geneticist (1 Green, 1 Blue)
Card Type: Legendary Creature – Human Scientist Villain

First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #31 (1965).
As a university professor, Miles Warren fell in love with Gwen Stacy, his student. He was devastated by her death and refused to accept it. So he started making clones of Gwen and Peter Parker, which led to him finding out his web-slinging secret. Warren was transformed into the Jackal, a furry, goblin-looking creature, but his obsession with cloning continued into the infamous Clone Saga. The Jackal is almost impossible to kill, as another clone will take his place permanently.

Sergei Kravinoff is focused on one thing: hunting. He scours the world looking for the most challenging animals, using traps and weapons to kill his prey. And it quickly became clear that Spider-Man was the greatest prey of all, so Sergei fixated on besting him. This culminated in the storyline ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt.’ Kraven always returns, however, through rituals or through clones.

Mister Negative is the master of deceiving appearances. When first appearing in New York as Martin Li, Mister Negative seemed to be philanthropic and helpful. He set up a soup kitchen and would help people in need. But in reality, he was a vicious crime lord who trafficked everything and anything into the city. Likewise, his powers can be used to heal or corrupt, showing that he can help if he wants to. He’s a crime boss who’s always trying to gain territory in the city.

First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man Issue #101 (1971).
Now reduced to little more than a meme due to the movie, Michael Morbius is a sad affair. Trying to cure his own blood disease, he inadvertently turned himself into a pseudo-vampire. He wasn’t dead, but he had the visage of a vampire, the bloodlust, and an aversion to sunlight. In his first appearances, he was a villain, battling Spider-Man as he needed to quench his thirst. But over time, he has flitted back and forth between being a villain and an anti-hero. He has been helpful in dealing with other monsters and trying to find cures for other curses and afflictions.

With sharp claws on his gloves, sleeping gas capsules, smoke bombs, and other weapons, Prowler tried to be a burglar without hurting anyone. But he quickly reformed and became a hero, working with Silver Sable’s Wild Pack for a while. He and Spider-Man are great friends, and Hobie has even covered as Spider-Man on occasion.
Rhino, Barreling Brute (3 Colorless, 2 Red, 2 Green)

Card Text: Vigilance, trample, haste
Whenever Rhino attacks, if you’ve cast a spell with mana value 4 or greater this turn, draw a card.
First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #41 (1966).
Aleksei Sytsevich was placed into a suit and underwent a procedure to make him much, much stronger. The hide of his costume is impenetrable, and a sharp horn protrudes from the top of his head. As the rampaging Rhino, Aleksei was often used as the brute in an operation. He was almost impossible to stop at once, or Spider-Man’s physically strongest and toughest villain. Luckily for others, his intelligence often let him down. Like many of Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery, Rhino has tried to reform at times, usually finding the criminal lodge pointless, but is often coerced back into being someone’s muscle.

When a hero, he has served as the Scarlet Spider and even became the real Spider-Man, believing himself to be the original clone. He died in battle with Gwen Goblin, and was decreased as a hero. Kaine is another clone of Peter Parker, but lived his life in reverse of Ben. Reilly lived most of his life trying to be a hero, whilst Kaine was a violent villain. His cloning process went wrong, causing him to be deformed and suffer cellular degeneration. He spent most of his time as a hitman, while also attempting to track down both Ben and Peter. But after the Spider-Island event, Kaine was cured and became a perfect clone, too. He stole Spider-Man’s stealth suit, moved to Austin, and became an anti-hero with his own violent sense of justice.
