The developers of 2022’s acclaimed title Endling: Extinction is Forever have announced their next project: Rewilders: The Lost Spring. The game is an open-world action roguelite that blends creature collection with Metroidvania-style progression, all within an emotionally charged narrative.

Herobeat’s debut title, Endling: Extinction is Forever, told the heartfelt and heartbreaking story of the last family of foxes surviving an ecologically devastated future Earth marred by toxic environments, cruel hunters, and dangerous natural elements.

In a release to the media, Herobeat stated that, “While Rewilders isn’t a complete spiritual successor to the team’s first title, players can expect echoes of Endling’s heartfelt storytelling, lovingly designed aesthetics and score within, filled with messages that last well after the credits have finished rolling.”

What is Rewilders: The Lost Spring about?

In Rewilders: The Lost Spring, you play as Abi, a survivor returning to a poisoned world to rescue her lost family and restore the wilderness. The game sends you on a mission to rewild corrupted biomes and reactivate Springs, bringing life back one biome at a time. The new trailer shows off the game’s original theme song, featuring vocals from Julie Elven, known for her work on Horizon Zero Dawn.

Game Features

  • Creature Collecting: Collect Hântu, native creatures with active abilities, status effects, and passive bonuses.
  • Fast-Paced Combat: The game features third-person combat that combines melee, ranged, and Hântu skills.
  • Roguelite Elements: Expect randomized rewards, enemies, and starting points on each run.
  • Interconnected World: Traverse the world with Metroidvania-style progression using a glider, grappling hook, and wall-running abilities.
  • Base-Building System: Grow plants and fruits at your skyship base to level up your Hântu and unlock permanent buffs.
  • Narrative Progression: Your choices will shape the story. Choose between “Memory” or “Hatred” to influence your build and gameplay path.

In the reveal trailer for the game, it was clear that the developers drew inspiration from the works of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli films, with both their art style and the studio’s focus on ecological destruction, empowerment, and family through the game’s visuals and gameplay.

About Herobeat and the studio’s mission

An indie studio based out of Barcelona, Spain, Herobeat Studios was founded by two dedicated former colleagues with over 15 years of experience in both indie and AAA game companies. Their first title, Endling – Extinction is Forever, is a BAFTA-winning game focused on change and environmental awareness, and was released on July 19th, 2022.

The studio’s mission statement: “As we continue to grow, we’re dedicated to developing new IPs that address meaningful topics. At Herobeat Studios, we are deeply committed to raising awareness about social impact issues through the power of video games.

We understand the power of gaming as a medium for fostering empathy, sparking critical thinking, and promoting social change. Our games are designed to entertain, provoke thought, and evoke emotion. By addressing important issues, we aim to shape cultural conversations and make a meaningful impact on the gaming industry and beyond.”

Rewilders: The Lost Spring will release on PC; no release date has been set, but you can wishlist the title on Steam.
