Untamed (2025), Netflix’s latest mystery thriller series set in Yosemite National Park, spins a tale of drugs, dead bodies, and dark secrets. The limited series is written by Elle Smith and Mark L. Smith and directed by Thomas Bezucha, Neasa Hariman, and Nick Murphy. Eric Bana also serves as executive producer and the leading man as Special Agent Kyle Turner. Alongside Bana, the primary cast features Sam Neil, Rosemary DeWitt, Lily Santiago, Wilson Bethel, and Ezra Franky.

In Untamed, when a young woman’s body goes over the side of a cliff. Kyle Turner, a special agent with the National Park Service’s Investigative Services Branch, is called in to investigate what appears to be a gruesome death in the remote wilderness. While others are quick to assume the death is a tragic suicide, Agent Turner believes that there is something more to this death. As the investigation deepens, hints of an illegal drug operation and some other park secrets begin to unravel, along with the deep wounds of his tragic past.

Bana brings the right amount of intensity and vulnerability to the role of Kyle Turner. Bana’s portrayal captures Agent Turner’s multitudes exceptionally. Bana’s impressive performance displays a man who is collected and closed off on the surface, but teetering on the brink of despair beneath.

The supporting cast of Untamed (2025) layers lots of emotion into the story.

Untamed (2025)

The supporting cast also brings their layers, emotional weight, and depth to the story. Sam Neill is perfection as Paul Souter, the seasoned chief ranger whose wisdom masks his unease. Lily Santiago is a standout as Naya Vasquez, a determined former LA cop, turned rookie park ranger, balancing motherhood.

The series starts with a slow burn, but tension and suspense gradually build as the story develops. Each episode peels away a layer from the central mystery, revealing a deeper connection to other characters and narratives.

Untamed is an engaging story that explores how isolation, grief, and survival, both in nature and within ourselves, affect a person’s mind and behavior. The show examines how these themes manifest within the literal harsh terrain of the wilderness and the characters themselves.

For example, isolation and survival intersect for Naya Vasquez, the determined rookie ranger portrayed by Lily Santiago. Vasquez’s desire to give her son and her a fresh start in Yosemite following the fallout from her estranged ex requires a self-imposed isolation for her to protect her family.

Turner doesn’t isolate himself for survival, but rather because of his grief.
Untamed (2025)

Vasquez’s efforts to protect her son and their newfound life puts a lot of stress and anxiety on her. She does her best to balance motherhood and provide a healthy environment for her son, but the fear of her ex finding them, or worse, taking her son away, is a constant weight on her mind.

In contrast, Turner doesn’t isolate himself for survival, but rather because of his grief. He is separating himself physically and emotionally by limiting his interactions with others and living in a remote cabin alone. It is clear Turner prefers the company of the wilderness and animals over people, but it is not simply out of preference.

He uses isolation and the wilderness as an emotional barrier and security blanket. However, when the latest case calls for his expertise, his emotional barriers slowly crack as his reluctant newfound partnership with Ranger Vasquez pushes him to reconnect to the outside world.

Untamed (2025)

In Untamed, nothing is ever truly over until the last credits roll. Until the final episode, the show thrives on suspense, shocking revelations, and emotionally charged moments. The series keeps viewers hooked with unexpected twists and turns. Thankfully, the show also avoids unnecessary expositions, which helps keep the suspense up and the surprises at the end worth the build-up.

One of the show’s strengths is how it gradually unravels the details of the murder and the larger conspiracy hidden within Yosemite National Park. These reveals aren’t just shocking, they are deeply personal and interconnected. As the search for the victims’ identity and the investigation deepens, other characters have to face some harsh truths and traumatic pasts of their own.

Additionally, the show takes the time to humanize the deceased. Making them feel like a living part of the story instead of an afterthought. By giving the audience glimpses into their life, upbringing, and what ultimately led to their untimely demise, the shows give the victim some autonomy even in death.

Each new clue reverberates through the characters’ lives.

Each new clue impacts the case and reverberates through some characters’ lives, unlocking deep emotional truths. By the time the final pieces fall into place, Untamed delivers a surprising conclusion that is as emotionally resonant as it is jaw-dropping.

Untamed is a mystery thriller with a powerful emotional core. It has engaging suspense, thrills, and investigative intrigue, but the show truly excels when it comes to its character-driven story. In Untamed, themes of grief, isolation, and survival intersect with character arcs against the harsh yet beautiful wilderness setting. The show’s captivating writing, direction, and storytelling will keep the audience engaged and make jaws drop until the final credits roll.

Untamed is streaming now, exclusively on Netflix.
