Call of the Night Season 2 Episode 1 effortlessly executes the atmospheric feeling of the first season and seamlessly picks up right where the first left off. Kou and Nazuna are still trying to understand their feelings for each other and how to take things to the next level. They have conversations with the other vampires to decide, which leads to some interesting conversation topics.

Call of the Night Season 2 Episode 1 begins with Nazuna (Sora Amamiya) and Kou (Gen Sato) playing video games as usual, but they are then interrupted by Hatsuka (Azumi Waki) and Niko (Eri Kitamura). Niko takes Kou to the other vampires, who secretly only want to talk to him about his relationship with Nazuna for their own entertainment while they drink.

Following the events of the previous season, the protagonists decide in Call of the Night Season 2 Episode 1 that they’re going to try to fall in love with each other, as that’s the only way for Nazuna to turn Kou into a vampire. They’ll need to do this so they can remain together without endangering the rest of the vampires. To accomplish this, they are given a year with ten months left.

Call of the Night Season 2 Episode 1 is themed around romance, with the relationship between the two leads at the forefront. The conversation between Kou and the vampires leads him to realize how inexperienced he is and how his relationship with Nazuna has always been platonic and friendly.

Romance takes center stage in Call of the Night Season 2 Episode 1.

Despite the girls mainly being playful and clearly inebriated throughout, they still help Kou realize his feelings, and the characters are surprisingly articulate in this conversation. Although brief, this scene does a great job of showcasing each character’s personality.

Meanwhile, Hatsuka takes Nazuna to a clothing store to update her look and lectures her on how to progress her romantic relationship with Kou. While shy, it’s clear Nazuna is very interested in pursuing Kou romantically, but her own lack of experience is also holding her back.

Hatsuka provides great advice on how Nazuna should develop her relationship, and the scene effectively portrays Nazuna’s emotions. The dialogue is not only interesting but also engaging due to the eloquence of the characters throughout. Visually, it also showcases Nazuna’s contrasting cute side, thanks to the highly picturesque outfit change scene.

A conversation about different kinds of relationships offers a teaching moment.

However, the most engaging part of Call of the Night Season 2 Episode 1 comes in the latter half, where Kou and Nazuna head to a highly picturesque Tokyo at night to observe various types of relationships. While some of the passing relationships, such as those between adults and teenagers, are questionable, Nazuna argues that no relationship is inherently right or wrong, depending on the context, as long as the two parties are consenting.

She then draws parallels between people who engage in one-night stands and those who have the potential to become something more, just like their relationship. Moral quandaries aside, she does make good points about how there are different types of relationships, some of which should not be judged. This message is portrayed clearly through Nazuna’s passionate dialogue.

Although not eventful so far, Call of the Night Season 2 Episode 1 features great conversations that are eloquent, insightful, and engaging. The episode is also a visual marvel. Each scene, especially those in Tokyo, features amazing animation from LIDENFILMS, along with picturesque, highly detailed, and colourful backgrounds. Like the first season, all these elements succeed in flawlessly evoking the atmospheric aesthetic of walking through a city at night.

Call of the Night Season 2 Episode 1 is a great start to the season. It features great dialogue and amazing animation, focusing on the relationship between the leads in all the right ways.

Call of the Night Season 2 is streaming now on HIDIVE.
