During a special presentation at PAX East, Hasbro’s Wizards of the Coast gave fans a sneak peek at some of the bold characters, beloved stories, and stunning artwork from one of gaming’s most beloved franchises—Final Fantasy. Magic: The Gathering—Final Fantasy is already shaping up to be a stunning collaboration between one of gaming’s tentpole franchises and the iconic trading card game. The Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set is a mammoth undertaking, and right now, it’s shaping up to be a standout for both properties.

The Final Fantasy Set will launch on June 13, 2025, for fans globally, and the upcoming Universes Beyond Magic is already one of the top-selling sets of all time. The Final Fantasy Set represents a rich universe with iconic elements that fans have come to love over the franchise’s history.

During an exclusive interview at the event, we spoke in depth with the project leads. The MTG team discussed the new mechanics, the criteria for selecting elements of the series to be included as cards, and what it was like to work with Square Enix on the project.

“For me, when I’m thinking about Final Fantasy as a set, when we were ready to do it, it’s like the next natural progression of Universes Beyond,” said Dillon Deveney, Principal Game Designer. “Everything that we were doing up until then, we were getting our feet wet, we were learning, we were adapting. We were coming up with new processes. We were getting smarter and better. And then when Final Fantasy was here, it was like, we need to be on it, to take this on, and it’s where we wanted to go. It’s where a lot of people, right here, wanted to go.

“So when we got the green light, it was like, this is our chance to communicate, not only to other Wizards, but to like the world of, this is where we’d like to take Universes Beyond for now,” Deveney continued. “Hopefully this sets the template of like, this is what you can expect, the heart and soul and passion of every single set, and every single thing we work on, we put so much time into it, and this is kind of like the big reveal party for that. So it was kind of a way to kind of all take the next step of where we want to take UB. Final Fantasy is the way to do it.”

Starting today, players can pre-order Magic: The Gathering—Final Fantasy on MTG Arena. For more information about pre-order bundles. Additionally, Wizards of the Coast will have more to share about a special holiday release for Magic: The Gathering—Final Fantasy later this year. This is one universe we don’t want to leave.

Fans will see characters from every mainline Final Fantasy game, depicted through the lens of Magic: The Gathering. The showstopping element of the Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set is that it features the largest collection of Final Fantasy artwork ever in a single game. The team worked to leave no stone unturned, drawing from across the franchise for mechanics, characters, and more.

Magic artists have brought iconic moments from Final Fantasy to life in their own unique style, while classic art pieces make appearances on these epic cards in the Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set. Fans will see their favorite stories, characters, and moments from Final Fantasy depicted across Magic cards, with these series icons captured on over 100 legendary creature cards across the entire release. You can take a look at the full gallery of cards that the MTG team has shared.

To celebrate this incredible collaboration, Final Fantasy Through the Ages showcases iconic Magic cards with Final Fantasy artwork. These cards form a Bonus Sheet for the set featuring existing artwork from the Final Fantasy series, which highlights artists such as 天野喜孝/Yoshitaka Amano and 野村哲也/Tetsuya Nomura.

Magic: The Gathering—Final Fantasy will release with four distinct, pre-constructed Commander decks. Each Commander deck tells the story of an individual game from the franchise, letting you relive playing Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy XIV in a brand-new way.

The Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set features a host of special mechanics and content inspired by the series’ rich world and incredible creatures beloved by fans worldwide. Pulling from across the franchise of games, you look at the dive we saw during the panel below.

Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set special mechanic features include:
  • Job Select – A hero may walk many paths, and the gear those heroes carry can change their destiny. Job select is a new triggered ability found on some equipment in this set.
    • When an Equipment with job select enters, you create a 1/1 colorless Hero creature token, then attach that Equipment to the newly created token. Each job select Equipment works like other Equipment.
    • If the Equipment is no longer on the battlefield as the job select ability resolves, you’ll still create the Hero token, just without attaching it.
  • Saga Creatures – Summons are making an appearance in this set, as part of Magic: The Gathering’s first-ever Saga creatures. Players can call the summons for aid in battle.
    • Each Saga has a number of chapter abilities preceded by a Roman numeral symbol. If more than one chapter ability has the same effect, the Roman numeral symbols are just grouped together.
    • Saga Creatures enters with a lore counter on it, which causes the first chapter ability to trigger. At the beginning of the first main phase during each of your turns, add a lore counter to each Saga you control, including the Saga creatures. Whenever you add a lore counter to a Saga, check the number of lore counters it now has, and the chapter ability matching the new number will trigger. After the last chapter, the ability finishes resolving, and you sacrifice the Saga.
    • A Saga creature is also a creature and can do everything other creatures can do. It can attack, although not on the turn it comes under your control. It can block. If it has any abilities or flavor text besides its chapter abilities, those abilities and flavor text will be in a separate part of its text box under its type line.
  • Transforming Double-Faced Cards – Double-faced cards return in the Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set. By casting the front side of the card for its mana cost and fulfilling its required conditions, players can transform it to experience its alternate form. Iconic Final Fantasy characters, minigames, story moments, and more are represented on double-faced cards throughout the set.
    • TDFC are cast as the front face, and it enters the battlefield with its front face up always unless otherwise denoted by the action that brought it to the field.
    • While a TDFC is on the stack or on the battlefield with its front face up, it has only the characteristics of that face. This is also true if the TDFC is in a zone other than the stack or the battlefield.
    • Most TDFCs have an ability that tells you how the permanent transforms to its other face.
    • A double-faced permanent that transforms is still the same permanent, so any Auras, Equipment, and counters will stay on it. Any effect that was affecting it continues to do so.
  • Tiered – Some spells in this set offer three different effects, increasing in effectiveness with how much mana you pay for them. These spells all have the new keyword tiered.
    • Each card with tiered is a modal spell with three different modes. Each mode includes an additional cost. To cast a spell with tiered, choose one of its modes and the associated additional cost.
    • A spell’s mana value is always based on that spell’s mana cost, not any additional costs you pay.
  • Adventures – Adventures return in this set. This time, you’ll find them on a cycle of Towns.
    • Each Adventure has two parts and is an instant or sorcery that occupies the lower-left quadrant of the card.
    • Adventures have their own name, mana cost, type line (including the Adventure subtype), and rules text. The other part is a permanent—a land, in this case. The land’s name and type line are in their customary positions, and its rules text is on the right side of its text box.
    • You can either play the permanent part or cast the Adventure spell.
    • After an Adventure resolves and the card is exiled, you may play the card from exile but not the Adventure.
    • While a card with an Adventure is in your hand, library, or even exile, it has only the characteristics of the permanent, not the Adventure spell.
  • Landcycling – Landcycling abilities, seen on cards with a basic land type such as plainscycling, islandcycling, swampcycling, and so on, allow you to discard a card to search your library for a card with the specified land type.
    • This guarantees that you will have enough land throughout the game.
