Sideshow and Janus Films will release CLOUD, written and directed by Japanese master director Kiyoshi Kurosawa, on July 18, 2025. An important thing to note is that this slow rollout for the thrilling feature film will open in New York on June 18th, followed by Los Angeles on July 25th, before beginning its nationwide rollout.

When we reviewed the film at Fantastic Fest 2024, we had this to say about the film:

Cloud (2024) is funny and thrilling, with just the right amount of creepiness. It also has fantastic shootouts and a supporting cast that just doesn’t quit. But what makes this Kurosawa film stand out is its dedication to using every situation as the build-up to something rich—situational comedy, creep, and action all have a place, and it works wonders to keep you enthralled in this reseller’s story.

The film stars Masaki Suda, Daiken Okudaira, Amane Okayama, Yoshiyoshi Arakawa, and Masataka Kubota. CLOUD played at the Venice Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, and Fantastic Fest, among others. Additionally, CLOUD was chosen as the closing night film of Beyond Fest 2024, where Kurosawa was honored with a retrospective.

What happens in CLOUD?

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cloud (2024) released by Janus Films

Japan’s submission to the 97th Academy Awards, CLOUD, is a stylish, subversive thriller from suspense-maverick Kiyoshi Kurosawa. It follows Yoshii (Masaki Suda), an ambitious, yet directionless, young factory worker from Tokyo who side hustles in the murky black market of reselling, cheating buyers and sellers alike in the process. After swindling his way into loads of cash, Yoshii gradually attempts to disconnect from humanity, moving out of the city, shunning his girlfriend, and entrusting duties to his new, devoted assistant.

Then, bad things start happening. Before long, his life is plagued by a series of mysterious, sinister incidents that threaten to upend his success and bring about a most violent demise. A master of carefully simmering tension to a bloody crescendo, Kurosawa delivers a searing portrait of digital greed and vengeance.

Janus Film Release Slate for 2025:
  • Alain Guiraudie’s Misericordia
  • David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds and
  • Jia Zhangke’s Caught by the Tides
  • Ira Sachs’ Peter Hujar’s Day
  • Bi Gan’s Resurrection

Cloud begins releasing in the United States in theaters June 18, 2025.
