Anthony Mackie has built a career on being the best part of every project he’s in. Even when the film itself doesn’t hit the mark—whether it’s the supernatural comedy We Have a Ghost or the action-thriller Outside the Wire—Mackie is consistently that guy, elevating every scene he’s in.

I may not have loved every project during my rewatch, but I loved every moment he was on screen. His ability to bring depth, charisma, and energy to even the most uneven films makes him one of the most compelling actors working today.

With Captain America: Brave New World out now, it is the perfect time to revisit the range and depth of his career. While many know him as Sam Wilson, Captain America, or as Papa Doc from 8 Mile, Anthony Mackie’s filmography is packed with standout performances that showcase his versatility. Here are some of his best roles that prove he’s more than just a superhero or a battle rapper.

Brother to Brother (2004) – Perry

This war thriller isn’t just about bombs—it’s about the psychological toll of war. Mackie plays Sanborn, a soldier trying to keep his unit together while butting heads with Jeremy Renner’s reckless lead. His performance is raw, intense, and a great showcase of his ability to carry serious drama.

Triple 9 (2016) – Marcus Atwood

Anthony Mackie in Triple 9

Director: John Hillcoat
Writer: Matt Cook

A gritty, high-stakes crime thriller, Triple 9 features Mackie as a corrupt cop caught in a deadly web of double-crosses. His performance adds a grounded realism to the chaos, making him one of the film’s standout presences. He plays Marcus with calculated menace, making every scene he’s in feel unpredictable and charged with tension. Despite the film’s frenetic action, Mackie ensures his character remains layered, capturing both his ruthlessness and the desperation fueling his choices.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Max.

Detroit (2017) – Greene

Anthony Mackie in Detroit

Director: Kathryn Bigelow
Writer: Mark Boal

A harrowing and intense historical drama, Detroit takes on the 1967 riots, with Mackie playing a war veteran trapped in a violent police encounter. Mackie delivers a compelling performance that captures the sheer terror and injustice of real-life events. The film doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable truths, and Anthony Mackie’s portrayal adds a critical perspective to the film’s exploration of race and systemic violence.

Synchronic (2019) – Steve Denube

Anthony Mackie in Synchronic

Directors: Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead

Mackie shines in this unique blend of sci-fi and psychological drama, playing a paramedic who stumbles upon a drug that lets users travel through time. As his character grapples with the implications of this discovery, Mackie balances the film’s high-concept ideas with a deeply emotional core. His performance elevates what could have been a standard sci-fi thriller into a thought-provoking, gripping experience.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Peacock.

Point Blank (2019) – Paul

Anthony Mackie in Point Blank

Director: Joe Lynch
Writer: Adam G. Simon

An action-packed Netflix thriller, Point Blank pairs Mackie with Frank Grillo in a fast-paced, tension-filled ride. What makes this film work is Anthony Mackie’s ability to ground the action with a likable, everyman energy. He and Grillo play off each other perfectly, making this film a solid choice for fans of buddy action thrillers.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Netflix.

If You Were the Last (2023) – Adam

Anthony Mackie in If You Were the Last

Director: Kristian Mercado
Writer: Angela Bourassa

A quirky, heartfelt sci-fi romance, If You Were the Last sees Mackie play Adam, an astronaut stranded in space with his crewmate, played by Zoë Chao. The film is a charming and deeply introspective exploration of love, isolation, and human connection, framed through a whimsical lens that allows Anthony Mackie to showcase his softer, more playful side.

His chemistry with Chao makes the film feel effortlessly intimate, and his comedic timing balances well with the emotional depth he brings to Adam’s longing and contemplation. This is one of Anthony Mackie’s most engaging and heartfelt performances, proving he can handle romance and quiet drama just as well as action and intensity.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Peacock.

Twisted Metal (2023) – John Doe

Anthony Mackie in Twisted Metal

Developers: Rhett Reese and David Jaffe
Writers: Michael Jonathan Smith (showrunner), Rhett Reese, and Paul Wernick

Anthony Mackie takes the lead in this adaptation of the iconic video game, playing John Doe, a fast-talking driver in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The series leans into its chaos and humor, giving Mackie a chance to show off his comedic timing and action-star presence.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Peacock.

Black Mirror (2019) – Danny Parker (Striking Vipers)

Anthony Mackie in Black Mirror

Director: Owen Harris
Writer: Charlie Brooker

In one of the show’s most thought-provoking episodes, Anthony Mackie’s turn in Black Mirror explores love, technology, and identity. His performance brings emotional depth to an already powerful story about virtual reality and relationships.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Netflix.

All the Way (2016) – Martin Luther King Jr.

Anthony Mackie in All the Way

Director: Jay Roach
Writer: Robert Schenkkan

Playing an icon like MLK is no easy task, but Mackie delivers a strong, commanding performance in All the Way, where he squares off against Bryan Cranston’s Lyndon B. Johnson. Anthony Mackie captures King’s resilience and rhetorical power, adding gravity to a film that highlights the political maneuvering of the civil rights movement.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Max.

Altered Carbon (2020) – Takeshi Kovacs

Anthony Mackie in Altered Carbon

Creator: Laeta Kalogridis
Writers: Laeta Kalogridis and Richard Morgan

Stepping into the lead role for the second season of Altered Carbon, Mackie takes on a complex character in this cyberpunk sci-fi series. The role is physically demanding and action-heavy, but Anthony Mackie also brings a quiet, reflective intensity to Kovacs’ search for identity and redemption. His performance helps ground the series’ high-concept world-building in real emotional stakes.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Netflix.

Repentance (2013) – Tommy Carter

Anthony Mackie in Repentance

Director: Philippe Caland
Writers: Shintaro Shimosawa and Philippe Caland

A psychological thriller in which Anthony Mackie plays a life coach whose past mistakes come back to haunt him, Repentance is a tense, slow-burning psychological horror film. Mackie’s performance keeps the film gripping as his character is pulled into an increasingly terrifying situation with Forest Whitaker’s disturbed antagonist. His portrayal of a man trying to hold it together while everything crumbles around him is both intense and captivating.

Where to Watch: Rent or buy now on Prime Video.

The Future is Bright for Anthony Mackie

Mackie’s next projects include Sneaks and The Electric State, two films that expand his already versatile career with more voice-over roles. Nearly three decades into the industry, he continues to evolve, effortlessly shifting between action, drama, comedy, and now animation. His ability to bring depth and authenticity to every role ensures his filmography remains one worth exploring.

With his ever-growing range, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him step behind the camera in the future for a directorial debut. Whether he’s leading a franchise, stealing scenes in an indie drama, or adding new wrinkles to his performances, Anthony Mackie proves time and time again that he is one of the best in the business—and he’s only getting started.

I am just a guy who spends way to much time playing videos games, enjoys popcorn movies more than he should, owns too much nerdy memorabilia and has lots of opinions about all things pop culture. People often underestimate the effects a movie, an actor, or even a video game can have on someone. I wouldn’t be where I am today without pop culture.
