Why ‘EA SPORTS College Football 25’ Is The Best Sports Game Of 2024

The yearly churn of sports games can lead to some inconsistency regarding quality. Series like EA FC and NBA 2K often prioritize getting the game out rather than getting it right, and that means some years are much worse than others. While 2024 was a great year for sports video games overall, EA SPORTS College Football 25 stands out amongst the rest thanks to a long-term development cycle and commitment to reviving a franchise that had been dead for 11 years.

EA SPORTS College Football 25 stands out because it perfectly captures the college football atmosphere. Loading in and playing as your favorite team doesn’t feel like it did in NCAA 14; it feels so much better. Vastly improved graphics over the decade help, but the commitment to getting the little details right makes it stand out. Small bits of commentary specific to each team make the experience feel as close as possible to watching a live game of college football.

EA Sports meticulously created playbooks that were as close as possible to their real counterparts. EA SPORTS College Football 25 faithfully recreated over 100 team-specific playbooks, leaving players with countless options for controlling their favorite team. Teams like Army and Navy run their standard, run-first, triple-option plays, while a team like Oregon is ready to come at you with a potent offensive attack. This commitment to getting each team right adds to the experience’s authenticity, making it so great to play.

It was essential for EA SPORTS College Football 25 to nail the feel of college football. Authentic playbooks would not mean much if the gameplay itself was lacking. New passing and movement mechanics allow for unprecedented control, although those are optional and can be replaced with a more arcade-style feel.

College Football 25 offers mechanics but the same excitement.

It takes a while to learn the new mechanics, but once you do, it is clear that this is a step above the clunky playstyle of the Madden franchise. Movement is quick and fluid, like we see on TV every college football weekend. That was important to nail since it makes the experience so much more lifelike to play.

However, that incredible playing experience is only part of what makes EA SPORTS College Football 25 special. Where it stands out from the rest of the sports game landscape is its ability to bring friends together in a unique way.

Online dynasties allow friends to take control of whichever team they want and compete against each other in every aspect of the game. These dynasties are something that fans of the NCAA franchise kept alive for a decade after the release of NCAA 14, and bringing that back also brought back old friendships that had been dormant for so long.

Dynasty mode in EA SPORTS College Football 25 needs a few minor tweaks to make it as great as it once was, but just being able to load in as modern teams and players with friends felt like a leap down memory lane. The fact that everything is so seamless to learn makes it approachable for players who might not have played a sports game in a long time. I could join up and play with friends I had lost touch with over the years, which makes EA SPORTS College Football 25 such a special and meaningful game.

College football fans have an intense, often irrational relationship with their favorite teams. Personal connections, fierce rivalries, and a cascade of emotions take center stage every Saturday in the fall. EA SPORTS College Football 25 manages to take all that and bring it to life in a way no other sports game has been able to do.

The trick now is keeping up that balance with further yearly releases and avoiding the annual trap of quantity of quality, but for 2024, no sports game lit up screens quite like EA SPORTS College Football 25.
