Just in time for the holiday shopping season, Fatshark announces that Grim Protocols, their upcoming free update to Warhammer 40000: Darktide, will be released on December 3 and on all platforms, PC (Steam and Microsoft Store), Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. So mark your calendars and prepare yourself for the next round of adventures coming to Warhammer 40000: Darktide.

The update will introduce a new game mode, a new mission, new weapon families, a time-limited special event to celebrate the second anniversary of Warhammer 40000: Darktide, quality of life improvements, and more. But what does that actually mean? Let’s dig deep into the details.

Major Updates Coming to Warhammer 40000: Darktide

What is actually coming to Darktide with the latest update? According to Fatshark, there will be a decent amount to challenge players – both new and old – as they take in the latest update to the game.

  • New Game Mode – Havoc: Think you’ve mastered the threat over Tertium? Think again. Havoc is a new end-game experience that will test the resolve of the most seasoned operative. Be ready to face daunting challenges and earn new cosmetic rewards.

  • New Mission – Dark Communion: Return to the Carnival and explore its darkest corners. Steel yourself as you face hordes of cultists who will stop at nothing to achieve their dark communion.

  • Three New Weapon Families: tear through waves of enemies by wielding the destructive might of the Two-Handed Force and Power Swords, and the Ogryn Heavy Stubber.

Weapon Families Coming to Grim Protocols

As previously mentioned, three new weapon families will be added to Warhammer 40000: Darktide as a part of the new Grim Protocols update. But what exactly does that entail? Fatshark gave a little sneak peek on their website into each family’s features.

1) Two-Handed Power Sword (2 Marks) – Zealot: A massive, high-damage melee weapon with wide, sweeping attacks.

  • Munitorum Mk X Relic Blade
  • Munitorum Mk II Relic Blade

Two-Handed Power Sword – Unique Features:

Heat Activation Mechanic: Generates a heat gauge, building over time. Reaching the limit locks activation briefly (overheat mechanic).

Special Attack: Sprinting Heavy stab attack for unique engagement tactics.

2) Two-Handed Force Sword (2 Marks) – Psyker: A finesse-oriented weapon combining melee and psychic powers.

  • Covenant Mk VI Blaze Force Greatsword
  • Covenant Mk VIII Blaze Force Greatsword

Two-Handed Force Sword – Unique Features:

Force Cleave: Special attack releases a psychic cleave with scaling based on charge power (three stages).

Smooth Flow: Psyker’s psi-assisted techniques make the weapon feel lighter and more agile.

3) Heavy Stubber (3 Marks) – Ogryn: A heavy, precision-support firearm for Ogryns, blending suppressive fire with marksman capabilities that will keep the darkness at bay.

  • Krourk Mk IIa Heavy Stubber
  • Gorgonum Mk IIIa Heavy Stubber
  • Achlys Mk II Heavy Stubber

Heavy Stubber – Unique Features:

Primary Fire: Heavy, slow automatic fire for suppressive roles.

Alt Fire: A more precise, single-shot mode for longer-range accuracy.

Flashlight: Included to assist in low-light environments.

With new game modes, missions, and weapons, you’d think that’s all Fatshark is bringing to the table with its latest update. Nope, there is still more. With the arrival of the game’s second anniversary, the development team has added a little extra something to give special thanks to players for their loyalty and support.

  • Anniversary Special Event: To celebrate the second anniversary of Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, the game will host an event that rewards players with a unique weapon trinket.

  • More, including the expansion of the Penance progression track with new challenges and rewards, as well as quality of life improvements such as an extension of the Party Finder feature.

Warhammer 40000: Darktide is available now on Steam, Windows Store and Xbox Series S/X. It is available for preorder on PlayStation 5. The new Grim Protocols update will be released on December 3, 2024.
