There’s little that’s more terrifying than being physically unable to leave a dangerous place. From tackles that particular level of terror with more than a few of its characters. Especially with the monsters looking to maim, terrify, and kill the unwilling survivors of Fromville. Since From is about people who cannot leave a town hunted by unknown creatures, it’s not unusual for its characters to be all over the place. Regardless, there are more than a few characters to appreciate.
Listing off the best characters in a horror show like From isn’t an entirely arduous task. So, this journey might be somewhat short for you to embark on. Take my hand, and let’s briefly go to Fromville to see some of the best characters in this delightfully strange show.
Sara Myers
Characters used to sow chaos, usually by forces outside their control, don’t always land for people. And in most other shows, viewers would hate a character like Sara (Avery Konrad) so deeply. Yet she happens to be one of the best characters in the show because of what’s happening to her. Sara isn’t cartoonishly evil and doesn’t want to do the town’s bidding. Instead, she’s tormented and manipulated into causing death because she wants to go home (just like anyone would in her circumstances).
Sara’s hallucinations and mental connection to the town (something that’s still not entirely explained) help provide insight into what’s going on. She’s kind and willing to help people who wouldn’t otherwise trust her because of things she couldn’t control. Sara offers more than a few calm moments in a very twisty and mysterious show. There are enough characters who cause trouble for the town, and Sara brings much-needed calmness.
Jade Herrera
Hot-headed men in horror aren’t typically likable, and it’s hard to root for or care for them. So a character like Jade (David Alpay), who is wealthy and has more than a few abrasive moments, shouldn’t be engaging. Much to anyone’s surprise, he happens to be one of the most realistic characters of the bunch. Jade has no desire to settle down in Fromville and constantly tries to figure out why they’re all there. He’s also struggling with the deaths of those he’s developed a connection with.
Instead of being horrible and causing nothing but issues for his fellow residents, Jade sometimes lends an ear and is continuously being as honest as possible with people. He tends not to mince words, which I appreciate in a character. Losing him at any point would take quite a bit away from the show’s atmosphere. And the way Alpay plays him is one of the biggest reasons why that’s the case.
Kristi Miller
A queer character that’s flawed and complicated is almost always refreshing to see in a series. Representation is never unimportant, regardless of the type of series you’re watching. Thankfully, Kristi (Chloe Van Landschoot) isn’t just a background character; she is important because she’s a doctor and a paramedic. Her strong personality, emotional moments, and capability as a healthcare professional help keep the characters grounded. Not to mention her relationship with her fiancée, Marielle (Kaelen Ohm) provides much needed tenderness.
Overall, Kristi is a character I can’t imagine not being in the town, and her relationships with multiple characters are why she’s a steady main character. Without her knowledge or ability to confront people or ruffle feathers, From would miss many scenes that help her and other characters’ trajectory.
Victor Kavanaugh
It’s one thing to be stuck in a town like the one in From for a few weeks or months. But imagine being stuck there for decades and trying to be a regular person. Victor (Scott McCord) has been living in the town for decades and has survived through multiple massacres and instances of chaos. His character is played so carefully, his quest to discover the town’s secrets is admirable, and his scenes are often ones to watch out for, not just for portraying a traumatized character but because he’s undoubtedly one of the essential characters in the plot.
Victor’s ability to survive and quest to figure out the secrets of the town are admirable. He’s complex and might not always have a firm grasp on his emotions, but who would if they’d been stuck there since they were children? At the end of the day, Victor is a key part of what makes this show so mysterious, and that makes him a great character.
Boyd Stevens
As strange as that might sound, the main characters aren’t always fan favorites. However, Boyd (Harold Parrineau) goes against the grain in that respect and is played perfectly by Harold Parrineau. His journey as a character has been one of immense struggle, with the residents slowly turning against him, his son and daughter-in-law having dilemmas, and dealing with the town tormenting him in many ways. And yet he still tries his best because that’s all anyone could do in that town. It’s also nice to see a Black main character that isn’t written to be a flat stereotype.
Boyd is one of the best main characters on TV right now because of how he’s portrayed and his character trajectory. If that doesn’t count for anything, then I don’t know what it does.
From is a show with a boatload of characters that range from likable to insufferable. But the characters who make it worth it keep the show from becoming too frustrating. Each of them adds something to From in one way or another. Even the characters who might not have made the list provide minor moments throughout.
You can watch From every Sunday on MGM+.
