REVIEW: ‘Undead Unluck’ Episode 7 — “Dream”

After confronting the dangerous Spoil and his zombie hordes, Undead Unluck Episode 7, “Dream”, gives more context to the situation our duo finds themselves in. They may be learning more about what is happening, but will they be able to take down Spoil and complete their mission before his abilities win out?

The series so far has done a great job of injecting heartfelt moments into the middle of a more comedy-driven series. Undead Unluck Episode 7 does it better than any of the others when Fuko speaks with Ken, a young child from the town who, along with several other children, has not been turned into a zombie yet. Ken serves as a way to tell the audience more about how Spoil took over the town and gives more reasons to care about the fate of its residents.

There is a specific moment where Fuko tells Ken that she is with the Union and she is there to help. It is striking because up until now the Union has really only been a self-serving entity. Its members by and large don’t care for the fate of others, they just want to complete their missions and earn the rewards. Since Fuko wants to change the Union from the inside, it would make sense that she takes a different approach.

It is fitting, then, that the way to combat Spoil is to have unwavering hope in the face of despair. Spoil feeds on the fear of its victims, but those who hold onto their dreams can stave off their zombification. Fuko’s hopeful message inspires Ken to keep his friend’s dreams alive, therefore keeping them alive as well, but that hope will only matter if Fuko can deliver the help she has promised them. It adds to the stakes of the situation, and if Fuko fails it will be more than just her own neck on the line.

That storytelling is part of what makes Undead Unluck Episode 7 and the series as a whole so special. Sure we can see some epic action sequences and some hilarious comedic moments, but when it all gets tied together with sincere, heartfelt moments it really starts to stand out. It makes the viewer care so much more about the side characters as well as the main duo, something that is vital to the show’s success.

Undead Unluck Episode 7 isn’t just about the heart though, don’t worry. There is some truly incredible action that takes place as Andy and his newfound zombie allies fight Spoil head-on. It is always fascinating to see how Andy uses his abilities in battle and even better to see him do it alongside what they thought were their enemies. Spoil in its monster form is also just downright intimidating, and it remains to be seen how the good guys can emerge victorious here. Everything they throw at Spoil seems to fail, but not for lack of trying, and the finale for this battle is being setup to be truly amazing.

Undead Unluck Episode 7 is a beautiful tale about never giving up on your dreams even in the face of truly horrifying circumstances. There is plenty of action, but the driving force behind it all is the heart each character shows as the story unfolds.

Undead Unluck Episode 7 is streaming now on Hulu.
