Mashle Magic And Muscles Episode 10 — But Why Tho

With Mash and Lance triumphing in their battles in the last episode, Mashle: Magic And Muscles Episode 10 looks to see how Dot and Finn fair against their opponents. But can they hope to win their duel with their challengers being dual-line mages, and they are only single? Or perhaps some unexpected aid will arrive to save the day?

The battle that stands at the center of this week’s episode delivers a solid representation of what long-time anime fans have come to expect of such confrontations. From the pre-fight bravado of the participants to the eventual conclusion, Mashle: Magic And Muscles Episode 10‘s central fight delivers some good shots, mixed with a fair amount of the series humor. It even contains the classic reveal that one of our heroes is a rage hero.

Rage heroes are characters that can be fairly non-descript most of the time, until someone pushes them too far, causing their power level to spike up to ridiculous proportions. The most iconic example of this style of character in anime is Dragon Ball Z’s Gohan. The reveal that a character possesses this sort of trait is always exciting both for the short and long term of a series. It’s exciting in the short term simply because it immediately alters the circumstances of a fight, calling into question the things that the viewer believed they knew. It also opens up possibilities in the long term as it makes the character’s power cap an unknown. While normal single-line mages can only push their power so far, someone with this trait alters that, leaving their final potential to be determined.

This surprise wrinkle for one of our characters gives Mashle: Magic And Muscles Episode 10 a great excuse to go for it on the scale of the magical duel it highlights. Loads of effects go back and forth as the participants try to outdo each other. It is a genuinely fun moment for the series, allowing the animation to stretch its skills and providing far more visual flourish than most episodes have presented.

Once the battle wraps up, the episode jumps back to Mash to catch up with him. This cut is poorly handled, however, since a character’s presence in this scene causes some confusion about when this sequence takes place. Since there is nothing that states it to the contrary, one would assume this moment happens after the battle, but that seems unlikely given the character Mash runs into here and the part they play in the battle. This lack of clarity doesn’t ruin the sequence but definitely pulled me out of the moment while I reassessed what was going on.

While this scene is fairly entertaining on a visual level, it is mostly just content we have seen several times over. Mash is tested by someone through the use of their magic, Mash of course blows past them thanks to his extreme physical prowess, and his tester is dualy impressed. We get some background information about a couple of side characters and how they have been looking out for Mash in the shadows, but otherwise, this scene is simply more of the same. Not bad, but nothing new or stand-out.

Rounding out the episode we see Mash come face to face with the next challenger. While I wanted to get hyped for what this fight may promise, given what the show has brought us so far, there is little energy there since the outcome feels like a foregone conclusion.

Mashle: Magic And Muscles Episode 10 delivers some fun action and interesting reveals through its narrative. What comes next is set up well, allowing the story’s flow to continue smoothly into next week’s entry.
