Mob Psycho 100 III Episode 3 - But Why Tho

Mob Psycho 100 III Episode 3 has successfully reached a new level of humor and provided even more reasons to make the viewers stay engaged and interested in the narrative. The episode begins with Mob in yet another odd period of his youth as he suspects he’s becoming more popular with the ladies, due to his increasing potential of attracting their attention. Of course, this is far from the case, as while he is getting more attention, it isn’t romantic attention, and the humor leading to this odd misinterpretation becomes a forefront gimmick of the episode.

What’s funnier is the consistent use of subtle visual comedy via Mob’s exaggerated, buffly drawn face reminiscent of a Fist Of the North Star character. This gimmick, and Mob’s continuous misunderstanding of the situation, lasts throughout the episode but is balanced enough to be comedic and not annoying. However, despite its entertainment value, this part of the episode is just a subplot, and its main plot is a lot more interesting, albeit less comedic.

In the wake of the giant broccoli that appeared as a result of last season’s events, several religions and psychic groups have seemingly surfaced to claim they are the primary worshipers and religion of the divine broccoli. The “Psycho Helmet Cult,” the group started by Mob’s friend Mezato to worship him as a god, is at the forefront of all this. Due to the group’s recent rise in popularity and numbers, these several scummy sects decide to organize a contest to determine who will lead this new, misguided group for their own obviously selfish purposes. To counter this, Mezato convinces Mob to appear before the group and be their leader, and due to Mob’s recent boost in confidence, he surprisingly considers it.

This plot point not only interestingly progresses the seasons’ narrative but also, yet again, provides a glimpse into human nature and how easily swayed and misguided we can be when faced with something even remotely or seemingly celestial, divine, or just unexplained. It also gives us another insight into Mob’s character as he accommodates the idea of appearing before the cult. His dialogue with Dimple, who has his own selfish plans for the group, already suggests that taking advantage of them to boost his ego or social standing isn’t in his plans. Bundle all this with the unexpected cliffhanger, and I can safely say that the anime is heading in an unpredictable and interesting direction.

Production-wise, episode three had no action scenes, but it made up for it with vibrant backgrounds and the crisp character designs seen through Mobs’ highly animated face and the incredibly distinct, detailed line art in all characters. It’s great to know that studio BONES keeps the quality consistent throughout, at least thus far, regardless of the episode type.

Overall, Mob Psycho 100 III Episode 3 was highly entertaining and comedic, and I look forward to seeing the episode’s events be resolved.
