The Daily Life of the Immortal King Episode 27 - But Why Tho

The Daily Life of the Immortal King is a school life/ fantasy donghua (Chinese animation) produced by Bilibili. As legions of demons sweep over the earth, Ling was mysteriously swept away by an unknown individual that appeared to be some form of Fae. As the ending for this season grew closer I found myself wondering how the show would approach the ultimate resolution to the demonic invasion of earth. While it would be extremely unlikely that Ling wouldn’t just save the day, whether the story could weave some surprises into the festivities was the bigger question. Given just how much creativity the series has shown it is capable of I was extremely hopeful that they would pull out a couple of genuine surprises with this wrap-up of Season Two. Happily, I find myself thoroughly satisfied with what The Daily Life of the Immortal King Episode 27 delivers as it wraps up the season’s story.

From the episode’s opening moments that reveal the identity and history of the mysterious being that whisked Ling from the battlefield the last episode, to the end credits roll, this story manages to deliver every story beat with just enough surprise that it never fails to entertain. While Ling’s confrontation with the Demon King is the central moment of the episode, as has often been the case throughout this season, the true scene-stealer is Sun.

With Ling’s sudden absence from the battlefield, Earth appears to be doomed. Despite the long odds, Sun immediately takes it upon herself to rally humanity to resist the conquering horde arrayed before them. Sun’s part in this episode is a fitting final for her. She has grown a lot as a character and letting her step into the spotlight one more time is a welcome way to let her wrap up the season.

While there is a bevy of things to love in The Daily Life of the Immortal King Episode 27, the ultimate resolution of the story is a singular work of genius. The way the war ultimately comes to its resolution is a clever and comical stroke of storytelling brilliance. I never saw it coming, but what happens makes such perfect sense that it manages to be both insane and perfectly logical simultaneously. It perfectly encapsulates the clever magnificence of this show’s writing throughout the series and captures it in this one moment.

The visuals throughout The Daily Life of the Immortal King Episode 27 bring all the action, inspiration, and comedic moments to life effectively. The battle between Ling and the Demon Emperor with a great sense of scale that allows it to feel on par with the biggest anime battles.

When all is said and done, The Daily Life of the Immortal King Episode 27 manages to wrap up this season with a wonderfully entertaining conclusion. Ling and Sun each get some great moments and bring some surprising twists to what could’ve been an overly predictable end.

The Daily Life of the Immortal King Episode 27 is streaming on Funimation.
