Pretty Boy Detective Club Episode 7

Last time with the Pretty Boy Detective Club, all of the Pretty Boys posited their theories about the thirty-three mysterious pieces of artwork they found in the attic above their club room. Naturally, all of this guesswork didn’t lead them to the true answer… at least, not yet. However, thanks to silent member Sosaku, the club is on the case, and following the right path. Now, in Pretty Boy Detective Club Episode 7, we’ll wrap up this arc and mystery!

Pretty Boy Detective Club Episode 7 is the final half of this shorter, two-part arc. It picks up right after the end of episode 6 with the club members in the thick of the mystery and a lot of info-dumping. However, because it’s Pretty Boy Detective Club, it’s done with a grand soundtrack and is genuinely engaging. Still, time to focus on the mystery and the game that’s afoot!

In episode 6, it was posited that Towai Kowako, a former art teacher at the academy, was behind those suspicious art pieces. It also happens to be the case that she’s the same teacher who painted the massive painting in the school’s Auditorium. Of course, the story of Towai Kowako told in episode 6 became a school legend. She continues to be the focal point of the plot in Pretty Boy Detective Club Episode 7, especially since she’s kind of the reason this case exists in the first place.

Especially since she pulled off the kidnapping of a century by stealing away the entire student population using a painting that mimics the school auditorium. Nagahiro says it best: this is an impossible crime. Yet somehow, Ms. Towai pulled it off, and managed to avoid getting any charges for her amazing crime. But… how did Ms. Towai manage to get all of her art into the auditorium to pull off this big painting heist? Well, that’s part of the mystery of this episode. Moreso, it’s exactly what the Pretty Boys need to study up on if they’re going to crack the case.

It would be easy to write off Pretty Boy Detective Club as being all fluff and no substance, but the series really has capitalized on the mystery aspect of being a mystery series. It’s twisty in dramatic ways, and sometimes completely disconnected from reality. Yet that’s a lot of the fun of this series! The mere concept of a bunch of child detectives is already outlandish enough. Adding in all of the fun elements that make Pretty Boy Detective Club so much fun only heightens that effect. That effect is out in full force in Pretty Boy Detective Club Episode 7, to the best effect. It really kicks in in the back half when the plot goes real hard.

This episode was a huge step up from episode 6, if only because I didn’t spend the first few minutes of it confused. If there’s one failing for the show, it’s that it sometimes gets confusing. This happens especially when it’s trying too hard to be tricky and flowery. Of course, I’d place that blame on author Nisioisin, who wrote the source material. The show is an adaptation. In doing so, it adapts the good… and the bad. That said, Pretty Boy Detective Club Episode 7 is pretty darn good, and an absolute delight.

Thankfully, this episode was incredibly enjoyable. Whether we’re talking about the opulence of the show, the over-the-top nature of the Pretty Boy Detective Club’s mysteries, or just the mere fun of the premise, Pretty Boy Detective Club Episode 7, and the series as a whole, continue to be so much fun.

Pretty Boy Detective Club is now streaming on Funimation.
