REVIEW: ‘Mega Man: Fully Charged,’ Issue #6

Mega Man: Fully Charged #6 is published by BOOM! Studios. It comes from the creative team of writers A.J. Marchisello and Marcus Rinehart, illustrator Stefano Simeone, colorist Igor Monti, and letterer Ed Dukeshire. This is it, the final battle between Mega Man and Namagem. With Mega Man in his fully charged state, he’s drastically stronger than his brother, but the clock is ticking. The two fight, and it is clear that Mega Man has Namagem easily outmatched.

But when he’s ready to end the fight, Mega Man begins to suffer from a memory leak. As his emotions run wild, he starts to lose control and threatens to destroy all of Silicon City. Thankfully Mega Mini can intervene at the last minute. Now with Mega Man and his brother approaching reconciliation, all seems well. But from the shadows, a forgotten foe emerges and threatens all that Mega Man strives to protect.

With Mega Man: Fully Charged #6, the series concludes, and what a satisfying conclusion it is. It was refreshing to see Mega Man completely outpace one of his opponents. The battle with Namagem is quick and dirty and leaves little to the reader to interpret who is the stronger brother. After a full series of Mega Man doubting himself and falling for tricks and traps, ending with him finally sure of himself in a fight was a blast to read.

In addition to the excellent action sequences, this issue has a lot of heart too. Mega Man fully comes into his role as a hero and does so splendidly. He never gives up on Namagem and never gives in to his taunts or jabs. Despite all of the struggles the two have had, seeing them reconcile felt right. The fact that Zero was able to contribute and make her presence known in the fights was awesome. Particularly the use of her trademark sword towards the end. Despite it being a very personal final issue for Mega Man, everyone had a chance to make a difference and find victory.

The art was as beautiful as ever and hit all the same highs as it did in previous issues. My personal favorite panels were the ones where Mega Man was fully charged. The way his armor glowed and the impressive pseudo-pixelated blasts he fired from his cannon were dazzling. The colors brought the art home. Particularly the dusk’s purples and maroons in the background, which really helped the blues and oranges from the two brothers pop. The letters were solid and helped accentuate the artwork while being clean and easy to follow.

I’ve been singing the praises for this series for a while, and I’m happy to report that Mega Man: Fully Charged #6 is a brilliant conclusion. The plot threads tie up nice and neat while simultaneously leaving room for another series afterward. The story has action and heart in equal measure, and the art brings it to life with a unique flair. Now that the series is wrapped up, if you’re a fan of Mega Man, you’ll definitely want to check out the whole thing.
