Captain Marvel #12 is published by Marvel Comics, written by Kelly Thompson, art by Lee Garbett, colors by Tamra Bonvillain, and letters by Clayton Cowles. An undisclosed amount of time has passed since Carol’s victory over Star. But something is very wrong. The tranquility of Avengers Mountain is broken by blows that could shatter mountains. As Carol arrives looking for one of her old comrades.
Captain Marvel #12 wastes no time getting into the middle of the story. Opening this new chapter of Carol’s story with a throw-down with Thor definitely grabs the eye. The fight is filled with powerful images showcasing both’ s might. While it wouldn’t be unusual if the title character were portrayed as being easily too much for her opponent Thompson’s story gives the God of Thunder his due. Thor is not a pushover, to be cast aside by any mortal. Not even Earth’s Mightiest.
And while the battle is certainly the bulk of Captain Marvel #12 Thompson still finds the time to work in the emotion that has made this book so strong. Carol is clearly struggling with what is happening. Some sort of coercion or threat is clearly forcing Carol’s hand in this new plotline.
And while I might be concerned that this issue bigger moments were simply being done for shock and awe I have no such worry with Thompson at the helm. She has shown an amazing understanding of the character and knows the kind of emotional storytelling her fans have come to expect. I am greatly anticipating what is in store for us as the story’s secrets are revealed.
Captain Marvel #12 also features the premiere of a new series artist. And Garbett wastes no time making a great first impression. Both the action-heavy panels, as well as Carol’s emotional moments, are captured very well. The panels are often placed right in the middle of the action, which is always a big plus to me.
My only complaint with this book at all is in Carol’s new outfit. While I appreciate what it’s going for, and like the color scheme a lot, the mask is a hard pass for me. The awkward starburst visor doesn’t do it for me. It reminds me of the post-Avengers vs X-Men Cyclopes X-visor. Certainly not a deal-breaking problem, just a disappointment.
Captain Marvel #12 serves as a great starting point for this new story. With secrets clearly being kept out of sight I am completely sold on finding out what hidden force is driving Carol’s new agenda. With more pitched battles promised this story looks to be a big change of pace from the more down-to-earth focused stories of the first eleven issues. But with the trusted writing of Thompson, and the promising debut of Garbett propelling the story forward I look forward to seeing everything that is to come.
