Arc System Works America, Inc. announced that River City Saga: Journey to the West is now widely available for players everywhere.
Based on Journey to the West, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, the replayable roguelike action game follows in the footsteps of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. River City Saga: Journey to the West is built for solo players to thoroughly enjoy as you grow stronger with each run.
Familiar characters from the original classic novel are reimagined as Kunio in this epic tale. Players get a chance to play as Sun Wukong, Zhu Baije, Sha Wujing, and Tank Sansang and potentially master their unique fighting styles as they progress further into the game.
Key Features of River City Saga: Journey to the West
Distinct Characters
- It’s not a Journey to the West game without the memorable characters. Sun Wukong, Zhu Baije, Sha Wujing, and Tank Sansang are playable, but their powers need to be earned.
- Start with the speed-focused Wukong, then move on to the power-focused Baije, and finally to the long-range-focused Wujing.
- All three have a part to play in the story, but in their own time.
Roguelike Progression
- No run-through of River City Saga: Journey to the West is the same. The layout, enemies, skills, and items you acquire change completely every time, spawning new battle strategies with each playthrough.
- Even if you fall, it’s not the end. With each run, you grow stronger. And one way to grow stronger is through the game’s Skill Enhancement System.
Skill Enhancement System
- The game is equipped with a Skill Enhancement system that lets you freely boost stats using enhancement resources acquired during play.
- Bring collected resources back to your base to enhance specialized characters.
- Depending on how you combine equipment items and divine arts, you can build your own unique fighting style—your build. The more you play through the game, the more steadily your characters will grow!
- Keep an eye out for surprise visits from Gods. They may bestow skills and other gifts upon you during your run to make your characters stronger.
Unique Boss Battles
- One other way to get stronger is to go up against the incredibly tough bases featured in River City Saga: Journey to the West.
- Each boss has a distinct gimmick and attack pattern, keeping players on their toes.
- In addition, because player builds change how one plays, each encounter with the same boss will feel different as you adjust your gameplay to your build.
Familiar Faces
- For fans of River City, keep an eye out for familiar faces. River City series characters will make appearances, sometimes aiding Kunio’s crew on their journey and other times standing in your way as bosses.
What is River City Saga: Journey to the West?

Set in the Tang Dynasty era, demons ran rampant in the troubled world of River City Saga: Journey to the West, offering no salvation. Sorrowed by such times, the Buddha establishes the ‘Journey to Fetch the Scriptures’—a quest to retrieve sacred texts from distant Tianzhu using Buddhist teachings to bring salvation.
Meanwhile, buried beneath a mountain lay a monkey. His name is Sun Wukong, sealed away by the Buddha for causing chaos in Heaven, and 500 years were about to pass. Appearing before Wukong is the monk Tang Sanzang, who had set out on the Pilgrimage.
The skilled Wukong becomes his disciple, joining the journey to protect Tang Sanzang and atone for his sins. Joined by the pig-like, cheerful and carefree Zhu Bajie and the earnest and serious monk Sha Wujing, Tang Sanzang and his party continue their journey westward today.
The road to Tianzhu stretches a hundred thousand eight hundred miles. What kind of journey will you take your players on once you start on this quest?
