Rooster, HBO’s most-watched freshman comedy series, has been renewed for a second season. Starring Steve Carell, the series has racked up the views, with the first four episodes reportedly averaging 5.8 million U.S. viewers. Given how incredibly conservative the TV renewal market has become, this news will make fans of the series happy and may have more viewers tuning in with the promise of future episodes.
“Rooster is a heartfelt, endearing series, and its second-season renewal is richly deserved. Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses are masters of their craft, bringing their signature heart and humor to life through an incredible cast led by Steve Carell. We’re thrilled to continue this creative journey with HBO and Doozer,” said Clancy Collins White, President, Creative Affairs, Warner Bros. Television.
Not only has the series been pulling numbers, but it’s also received critical acclaim since it started airing. It is currently “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 88% rating.
Bill Lawrence, co-showrunner, executive producer, and writer, remarked: “We are so grateful to Warner Bros. Television and HBO for being such great partners and to Casey, Amy and Channing for giving us the opportunity to keep making this show with Steve and our amazing cast. It’s been a career highlight for both of us, but more for Matt than me.”
What is Rooster?

Rooster is technically two things. He is the name of a character created by the character Greg Russo in the HBO TV Series, Rooster. All jokes aside, set on a college campus, the series follows best-selling author Greg Russo (Steve Carell), who inadvertently moves onto the campus after his daughter, Katie Russo (Charly Clive), places herself in jeopardy of losing her teaching position there.
As the series has progressed, both characters have been working through their issues with one another while navigating their personal relationship traumas. Surrounded by a cast of memorable characters, the journey unfolding at the time of the renewal order has been full of relatable, hilarious hijinks that punctuate the sometimes more serious, heartfelt subject matter that has emerged.
