This week, Spike Chunsoft Inc. announced that STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT will launch in North America and Europe in 2026. And more importantly, it’s coming with some updates, including a significant graphics update.
While many American fans will know the property from the STEINS;GATE anime based on the 2009 visual novel of the same name, the 2016 Steam release of the original game is still beloved. That said, with new additions to the game, it seems like there just may be a reason to come back.
Still in development, STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT revisits STEINS;GATE (2009), which was originally released for the Xbox 360. RE:BOOT will feature updated visuals and new narrative content.
What is STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT about?

The original game used a “phone trigger” system, which allowed players to make choices that shifted the game’s plot, and I’m sure we can see that happening here. This game and the last follows a group of students led by protagonist Rintaro Okabe, who discovered a way to change the past via mail, using a modified microwave. Yes, this is the plot.
What is new in STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT?
The game features refined character illustrations by character designer huke, along with event stills produced under huke’s supervision. Background graphics depict Akihabara as it appeared in 2010, created from extensive reference materials.
Players can see the first look shared by Spike Chunsoft below, each accompanied by the text that the publisher shared to help players understand and explain how they have defined the game’s aesthetic, and both modernize the game while keeping its unique identity.

STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT Backgrounds

The background graphics are based on documents from that period and depict Akihabara circa 2010 in great detail. New locations not featured in the original version have also been added to complement and enrich the story. Spike Chunsoft shared images of both the 2009 backgrounds and the new ones that players can expect.

STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT Event Stills
Event stills, all newly recreated from storyboards, are more closely tied to the story and deliver greater dramatic impact. Additional scenes not included in the original version have also been added, furthering a sense of immersion.
What is the STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT release date?
There isn’t a specific release date for the game; however, players can wishlist the title on Steam.
