Original anime feature films feel so far away, given the recent trend of re-releasing episodes of shonen series as theatrical experiences. From Jujutsu Kaisen to Demon Slayer, it seems like that’s all we’re getting. Which is why the arrival of more original anime features on Netflix is exciting. The latest is Cosmic Princess Kaguya! and it’s coming to Netflix on January 22, 2025.

Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is Shingo Yamashita’s debut in feature-length directing, following his acclaimed work for MAPPA on the opening sequences for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 and Chainsaw Man.

“This is my first full-length original animated film,” Yamashita tells Netflix. “I poured into it everything I’ve learned about visual expression, my love for unique characters, and my deep affection for the internet culture that’s continued since the 1990s. It’s a bright, fun film – so please sit back, relax, and enjoy it!”

What is Cosmic Princess Kaguya! about?

The film is inspired by “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter,” Japan’s oldest folktale. Taking something traditional and mixing it with a modern touch, Shingo Yamashita integrates music and fantasy to do so.

Netflix’s synopsis of the film is as follows: Set in the virtual realm of Tsukuyomi, the story unfolds as a live performance marrying original music with Yamashita’s signature style of polished visuals, emotive pacing, and dynamic 3D camerawork to boldly transform this classic tale for a new generation.
