Hanazakari no Kimitachi e, better known as Hana-Kimi and To You in Full Bloom in English, has been a formative manga for generations, and now it’s getting its first anime from studio Signal.MD (known for Nina the Starry Bride). Originally created by mangaka Hisaya Nakajo and published by Hakusensha (localized and published in English by VIZ Media), the anime is set to release as a part of the Winter 2026 season, exclusively on Crunchyroll in the United States.

The classic and beloved rom-com story has also released a brand-new trailer, celebrating its first-ever anime adaptation. The series is led by director Natsuki Takemura (known for Go! Go! Vehicle Zoo), and will feature J-Pop duo, YOASOBI, performing both the opening and ending songs for the series.

If you’re looking to learn more about the iconic shojo series and who is attached to the anime, check out the information below.

What is Hana-Kimi about?

Hana Kimi Anime But Why Tho

Originally released in 1996, the series ran for almost a decade in Hana to Yume magazine. The series has helped define the cross-dressing trope in shojo romances. Hisaya Nakajo’s 23-volume story follows Mizuki Ashiya, a Japanese girl living in the United States, who sees high jumper Izumi Sano on TV.

Amazed by his performance (and his looks), Mizuki begins to follow his athletic career and, in a totally non-creepy way, discovers that he is attending Osaka High School, years after her crush began. Inspired by him, she’s also a track star, and just maybe she can make a team in Japan.

Despite the school being an all-boys school, Mizuki convinces her parents to send her to Japan all by herself, and yes, she’s going to Osaka High School. After cutting off her hair and doing her best boy impression, she enters Osaka HS and becomes quick friends with her idol. The only problem is that Izumi no longer wants to high jump. While Mizuki struggles to keep her true gender under wraps, she also tries to be the spark that Izumi needs to return to track.

Hana-Kimi Anime Synopsis from Crunchyroll:

Japanese-American track-and-field star Mizuki has gotten herself to transfer to a high school in Japan…but not just any school! To be close to her idol, high jumper Izumi Sano, she’s going to an all-boys’ high school…and disguising herself as a boy! But as fate would have it, they’re more than classmates…they’re roommates! Now, Mizuki must keep her secret in the classroom, the locker room, and her own bedroom. And her classmates — and the school nurse — must cope with a new transfer student who may make them question their own orientation…
