Today, Netflix announced that The Future is Ours, a new live-action adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s book, The World Jones Made. This “audiovisual” adaptation also marks the first time that one of the science fiction author’s works has been adapted in Spanish. The Future is Ours production is bringing together talent from Latin America, and not just in front of the camera, but behind it, too.

“We have approached Philip K. Dick’s work with great respect and admiration, finding themes that are powerfully relevant today. Without a doubt, the challenge is immense, but we are proud to tell a story that will show Latin America as a force of resistance in the new order,” Francisco Ramos, Vice President of Content for Latin America at Netflix, said via the Netflix Newsroom.

Adding, “It will be an unprecedented production of the highest ambition in Latin America, that will demonstrate that these types of stories can also be told from our countries, in Spanish and with exceptional quality.”

A dystopian series, The Future is Ours, will bring together director and screenwriter Mateo Gil (Pedro Páramo, The Minions of Midas) as showrunner, Brazilian directors Vicente Amorim (Senna) and Daniel Rezende (The Son of A Thousand Men), and Argentine director Jesús Braceras (Barrabrava).

The series is also a dual production from Latin American K&S Films (The Eternaut) and Electric Shepherd Productions (The Man in the High Castle), the production arm of the Philip K Dick estate.

The Future is Ours is an eight-episode limited series set in the year 2047. Netflix’s official synopsis is as follows:

Ecological collapse has led to the creation of FedSur, a coalition of South American countries that applies extreme measures to protect nature and counteract the prevailing hunger and violence.

A new and captivating voice then emerges on the internet, a voice much more powerful than any other because it is capable of predicting the future. Police officer Hugo Crussí discovers that behind the voice is a young preacher named Jonás Flores, but his arrest causes him to become the spiritual leader of the continent overnight.

Forecasting the fall of FedSur and victory over climate change, Jonás will make the Latin American people dream and will get many to join his reactionary revolution. Meanwhile, Crussí, pursued as a member of the resistance, will embark on a suicidal mission to end the tyrant, who will have foreseen the assassination and will be waiting for him.

Philip K. Dick’s daughter, Isa Dick Hackett, is an executive producer on the series and offered a comment to the Netflix Newsroom: “It’s an honor and a privilege to collaborate with Netflix, Francisco Ramos, and this stellar creative team on the first Spanish-language adaptation of my father’s work for the screen.”

“Mateo’s adaptation of the novel is inventive and bold while retaining the essence of the original. I have long believed that the rich culture and incredible talent in Latin America provide an extraordinary setting for this sort of ambitious project, and the passion expressed by the entire team is truly inspiring.”

Dick series are among the best representations of it, with creatives from Brazil, Argentina, and more, oh, and the Philip K. Dick estate as well.
