RECAP: ‘Brilliant Minds’ Season 2 Episode 3 — “The Pusher”

While Brilliant Minds Season 2 has started off strong, it’s felt a little crowded in terms of storylines and characters. It’s built out the word of Bronx General for the better, but there’s no question it was a jarring beginning. However, Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3, “The Pusher,” balances out Season 2’s premises by scaling back to our regularly scheduled program.

The beginning of seasons is always tricky. There’s a lot to catch people up on, and with Brilliant Minds, it was a lot, as well as new stories and dynamics to introduce. By the time an episode three rolls around, though, the newness of the season should start mixing well with the new aspects. Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3 achieves this by introducing a case involving a woman named Gloria (Patrice Goodman), who seemingly gets hit by a train after being pushed onto the tracks.

Who pushed her? The police seem to think it was Adam (Liam Galway), an autistic man whose caregiver is Gloria. What follows is a pretty classic case of Wolf (Zachary Quinto), along with his team, doing everything they can to protect their patient, while strong side stories about Dana (Aury Krebs) and Katie (Mishel Prada), Ericka (Ashleigh LaThrop), and Carol (Tamberla Perry) carry the rest of the episode.

Katie and Dana have a beautiful reconciliation in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3.

Katie endangers her life to save Gloria from the train tracks, something that gets her a lot of praise from the nurses at Bronx General. She’s seen as a superhero—someone willing to go the extra mile for her patients. We’ve seen this before.

In Brilliant Minds Season 1, when we first met Katie, she had entered a drug den by herself without any backup, and got a bullet in the shoulder for it. This consistency for a love interest character is some brilliant writing, and makes for a great dynamic with Dana.

The two exchange some passive-aggressive remarks throughout the episode, culminating in a really beautiful scene of reconciliation. It’s a conflict born out of love for each other, and a moment that reminds us of Dana’s past losing her sister at a really young age.

This is one of those grounding character moments that works on multiple levels. A reminder, for the audience; a peak into Dana and Katie’s relationship; and a set-up for the reveal at the end of the episode, something that also promises a closer look in the future.

Dana and Ericka are getting a much bigger focus this season.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3 Cast

There’s a much bigger focus on Dana and Ericka so far this reason. While it seems like Jacob and Van are acting more as recurring characters now, Dana and Ericka have been at the forefront for these past episodes. Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3 emphasizes their friendship more, but also unravels it a bit.

Ericka is harboring her secret about the pills she’s taking for her anxiety. She dives into an investigation about who turned Carol into the board, with Dana gently shooting down Ericka’s efforts to get her to join, especially since Carol asked them not to.

This newly reinstated Carol straddles the line between indulging Wolf in his antics and drawing the line in the sand. We’ve seen Wolf and Carol be there for each other and support each other, but I also really appreciated how Carol put her foot down when Wolf kept asking her to put her job at risk. While Wolf has a noble point, Carol’s not wrong to be wary, especially after just being reinstated. Wolf understanding that and finding another solution so as not to put Carol’s job on the line was also nice to see.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3 points out how Wolf and Carol are treated differently.

Wolf and Adam in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3

This part of Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3 hammers home a difference between Wolf and Carol. Wolf gets away with a lot of antics. Name dropped are moments from Season 1—taking PCP at the hospital and dragging a brain surgery patient to a bar hours before his surgery. But does Wolf get reported? Nope. It’s all in the name of helping his patient. Plus, his mother was the chief medical officer, so that’s always helpful when you want to break a few rules.

Carol, on the other hand, made one mistake and almost lost her job. Now, what Carol did was absolutely not a good thing. And while part of it was motivated by a selfish, albeit understandable, desire to understand why her marriage fell apart, it was also in the service of Allison, who was clear about not wanting a new doctor. Sounds like something Wolf would do.

Ericka mentions that things like this in the workplace are never kind to women, especially women of color. Assuming it was a colleague in the hospital who turned her in, they never gave Carol the benefit of the doubt like they do with Wolf.

Shockingly, it’s Dana who turned Carol into the board.

Wolf and Carol in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3

Which is why the reveal that Dana was the one to turn Carol into the board is so shocking. Dana’s no stranger to discrimination and has been around Wolf for a lot of the shenanigans he pulled. But the scene between her and Katie is perhaps the most telling explanation, or at least, it can point us in the right direction.

She mentions her sister again to Katie, and then, in response to Ericka’s own shock about Dana turning Carol into the board, she says that she doesn’t have an obligation to explain why, but she does have her reasons.

Considering Carol is a psychologist, there’s a chance that whatever happened to Dana’s sister is the result of a psychologist’s negligence. Regardless, it’s a great reveal that puts Dana and Ericka at odds, and seeds the idea that more information about Dana is on the way. And maybe a confrontation between Carol and Dana, despite Carol’s insistence that whoever turned her in did the right thing.

The case of Gloria and Adam is a really moving story about love, with a touching ending. While not the most detailed case they’ve ever gotten, emphasis was put on meeting patients where they’re at. In Adam’s case, that meant searching for a communication method he was comfortable with.

Michelle really gets to take center stage in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3.

Michelle in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3

Taking center stage in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3 is Michelle (Stacey Farber), Van’s ex, who ends up as Adam’s case worker, and who brings him to Bronx General to delay an unwarranted arrest. The case allows for some really sweet moments between Michelle and Van that could see them getting back together. Though she shuts him down, it’s pretty early in the season. Michelle made a great addition to the team, regardless.

What crowded the previous episodes were the six-month flash forwards. While intriguing, it was nice to not have them this episode, and instead focus on the here and now. After the kiss in the last episode, Wolf tries to talk to Josh (Teddy Sears) about it, though Josh always has a convenient excuse to get out of it.

Brain surgery can wait, man. Love is staring at you from down the hall. But boy, this next bit is juicy. Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3 ends with Wolf walking into the office of the new chief medical officer, only to discover it’s Josh. This slow-burn reconciliation just got a whole lot messier, but I’m here for it.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3 slowed things down a bit to create a more balanced episode, with plenty of great character dynamics. Carol and Dr. Thorne already have some fantastic chemistry; let’s hope that continues in the way it looks like it’s headed.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 3 is streaming now on Peacock, with new episodes on Monday nights on NBC, available to stream the next day on Peacock.
