Battlefield REDSEC Is Here — Bringing Battlefield’s Free-To-Play Battle Royale and More

After having a well-received release, EA and Battlefield Studios have officially launched Battlefield REDSEC. This free-to-play experience fuses the series’ staples with what the studios promise is a fresh take on the Battle Royale genre. In addition to the BR, REDSEC also features a new squad-based mode named Gauntlet, and finally, the Battlefield Portal.

In our review of Battlefield 6, we said, “Battlefield 6 is a giant leap forward for the franchise, returning it to the peak of online first-person shooters. There was a ton of love and detail put into every aspect of the game, and it has the potential to dethrone Call of Duty as the king of online shooters.”

The launch of REDSEC comes alongside the start of Season 1 for Battlefield 6, which kicks off with new content bringing the action to Southern California. Head here for more information on Battlefield 6 Season 1. But one crucial callout is the studios’ promise to leave all gameplay-impacting features free or earnable.

What is Battlefield REDSEC?

Battlefield REDSEC is a new sandbox set in a destructible environment called Fort Lyndon, featuring the beaches and backyards of California. Short for Redacted Sector, this new free-to-play package includes multiple ways to play within the REDSEC universe. A sandbox set in the backyards and beaches of California, in a destructible environment called Fort Lyndon, REDSEC offers up three unique experiences to the game.

About Battlefield REDSEC’s launch, Byron Beede, General Manager of Battlefield, said in a release to press:

“Battlefield 6 launched a little over two weeks ago and shattered every franchise record we have, quickly becoming one of the biggest launches of the year…and we’re not done yet, the next chapter of our Battlefield universe launches today with Battlefield REDSEC, our new experience that includes Battle Royale crafted with the series’ explosive DNA, to our cutthroat squad competition mode Gauntlet, and even new ways for our community to build and experience Portal.

REDSEC is everything you love about Battlefield – destruction, intense combat, vehicular carnage – in a new, massive playspace that’s free for everyone to experience.”

Now entering REDSEC, a free-to-play Battlefield experience built on Battlefield DNA. Drop into Fort Lyndon, a government testing ground turned warzone, where squads fight for survival in a Battle Royale only Battlefield can deliver. Experience massive-scale destruction, fast-paced squad play, and the deadliest ring in BR.

Battlefield Battle Royale

In Battlefield’s free-to-play Battle Royale, players will drop into a massive battle with 100 players. With a gameplay experience focused on Battlefield’s core pillars, the Battle Royale will use Tactical Destruction to help bring a new level of strategy to the genre.

The focus here will be on players creating their own paths to victory or turning the environment into a deadly weapon, using it strategically to take down other teams. Destruction was one of the key factors we highlighted in our coverage, and we can only imagine what it will be like to roll out in this new mode. But if it’s anything like the existing Battlefield 6 destruction gameplay, it can turn the tide, especially when it comes to those pesky snipers.

Gauntlet

Battlefield REDSEC isn’t just adding Battle Royal; the new free-to-play community also includes Gauntlet, a new squad competition mode. While squad-based play is already a feature in Battlefield 6, Gauntlet promises a new level of intensity, focusing on speed.

In it, eight teams of 4-player squads compete in a series of round-based missions in a tournament-style format, with elimination as the focus. The speed I mentioned is by design: each round consists of five-minute windows for squads to complete their mission objectives and face elimination while doing so.

Higher stakes with elimination and a faster-pace locked in for players, Gauntlet is upping competitive play for players looking to get even more stressed (read: have fun) on the Battlefield.

Portal

Finally, REDSEC brings audiences the long-awaited Portal. One of the most well-received announcements of the game’s launch., Battlefield Portal gives players the tools to create or discover their own REDSEC experiences in the ever-evolving Fort Lyndon playspace.

In an attempt to put player choice and creativity first, the Battlefield Portal will give players the chance to make a grueling battle environment you just wouldn’t see in the real world, or set drastic rules like a sledgehammer-only match for anyone to jump in and experience (or just your friends, up to you).

The suite of powerful scripting and customization tools is available for free within the Fort Lyndon sandbox. It offers a unique building experience, which has long been one of the most beloved modes in any title. Please make your own challenge, put it into the wild, and have fun.

Battlefield 6 is out now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (via Steam, EA App, Epic Games Store).
