Netflix’s anime offerings continue to expand, and this time it’s by expanding the world of Baki. Netflix has officially announced a new series, BAKI-DOU, which will adapt the legendary “Miyamoto Musashi” arc from the celebrated manga. The series will see Baki Hanma, fresh off his climactic battle with his father Yujiro Hanma, face a new challenge in the form of Japan’s most revered swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi.

The announcement was accompanied by the release of a teaser trailer and key art, providing fans with their first glimpse of the next chapter in the global franchise. The release date for the series has not been announced yet.

Created by mangaka Keisuke Itagaki, the Baki franchise has already achieved massive success, with over 100 million manga copies in circulation. The series has different eras beginning with Baki the Grappler (42 volumes), Baki (31 volumes), Baki Hanma (37 volumes), Baki-Dou (22 volumes), Bakidou (17 volumes), and Baki Rahen (4 volumes). Netflix has adapted Baki and Baki Hanma, and is now focusing on the next leg of the franchise.

What is BAKI-DOU about?

The story of BAKI-DOU centers on the extraordinary resurrection of Miyamoto Musashi, who is brought back to the modern era through cutting-edge science and shamanistic rituals. However, this is not a gentle return; it is a full-fledged resurrection of his warrior spirit, ready to test his skills against the strongest fighters of the present day.

As Musashi seeks out challengers, Baki and other fan-favorite characters, including Doppo Orochi, Jack Hanma, and Kaoru Hanayama, must confront this new, unprecedented threat. The series is set to explore a clash of eras and fighting philosophies, pitting the raw strength and evolving martial arts of the modern age against the disciplined, deadly techniques of a legendary samurai.
